First off, I don’t eat gas so the price of it will have absolutely no impact on my caloric intake. Second off, people in depression because they stay at home need to move. They can use horses to move. Third off, take a bus.

I regularly pay 90p+ per litre and if my calculations work out correctly that is £3.57 to the US gallon (in some areas it is now over £1 a litre).

£3.57 is $6.47 per US gallon

And you think you are hard done by?

Paul

P.S. Can any American here present explain why we are getting these dreadful third world pictures of people pleading for some/any government assistance? What happened to civil defence planning? I grant you, it may be media bias, but we are getting relayed an abysmal tale of officialdom totally unable to cope.
The BBC view
This was the worst hurricane ever known, in terms of the deadly storm surge. The unique topography of New Orleans made it particularly horrific. The best laid evacuation plans were still ignored by some people, while others could not get out in time, but that does not really matter now, as carnage is still carnage.

More importantly, the tone of the post that reaised these questions is combative. I urge that we not prolong this aspect of the discussion, as I predict it will get out of hand.

Pardon? Where do you come up with this stuff, Chatter? “Tone”? “Combative”? If it gets “out of hand”, posts like yours are sure to fuel it. [head shaking .gif]
Yes, Chatter, I agree with you about the hurricane. My prayers certainly go out to them. However, I was really only commenting on the gas prices rising so quickly. To the people out of the US, it is not the amount, it is the quick rise which I am not sure was justified, but perhaps I am not correct. At any rate our prices rose about every hour for the past 24 hours. Last night there was a shortage, but since the price has leveled, there seems to be plenty. Amazing! BTW, we have no bus service in our town of aprox.40,000 nor horses.WinkIf your job is set to the cost of living, it probably does not bother you, however, many people are not so lucky and it eats tremendously into their paycheck.

Sorry, that is an unfounded rumor. Completely untrue.
Why do people like to spread false rumors (“false rumors” is probably redundant)? Doesn’t anyone ever spread good rumors? I’ve got one – the world IS NOT coming to an end, at least for today. In 5 billion years the sun is going to blow, so you’ll want a good sunscreen (but, that’s another bad rumor, and something you can put off for a while).

Carpool, hitchhike, roller shakes, scooter, golf cart, hybrid? I *am* having a hard time visualizing a hybrid low-rider.

Put a trailer on the motorcycle?

Such negativity.
Mrs. M, I meant that there are no rations, gas station closures or food deliery restrictions going on in South Florida right now. (As I write this, I am in Miami.) Yes, there are some places that are raising prices (though nothing like what happened in Atlanta 48 hours ago), but there are no restrictions. Maybe someone's convenience store/gas station stated that that particular shop was out until next week, but that is not what is occurring here right now.

As for my other comment, I simply was wary about a post that basically demanded an explanation of Americans as to how they managed to let such a catastrophe occur, as well as another quip. From there I simply see such a discussion sliding downhill.

Yes, it appears to be sliding down that hill. “Demanded”? You sure have a flair for the dramatic.

There were some reports about shooting at helicopters (maybe another one of those bad rumors), so perhaps there’s some interest, in that aspect. Sounds like Mike is just looking for collaboration with BBC.

Well, does anyone actually understand women? Although, my Mom did give me some great insight. She said, “Rick, once a month, don’t be surprised if a girl doesn’t want to go swimming.” I’ve never forgotten that. To this day, I’m never surprised when that happens.

As the originator of this, before it descends, once again, into a "bun fight" on the subject of Brits v Americans, let me explain.

If I sounded "combatitive", that wasn't the intention. It is just that for the past few days we have been shown horrific pictures of a disaster with the most well equipped nation in the world in terms of helicopters, rescuers etc etc seemingly unable to cope. If you read the BBC link I gave you, it does seem as if they are reporting on the activities of some incompetant government in west Africa. This attitude is catching. Are they accurate in their reporting?

Please don't construe this as me being hostile to you. I certainly don't think our Government is wonderful, but I would have hoped for a higher level of efficiency.

How are your press reporting it? Do they feel that the response is as good as it could be given the horrendous circumstances?

Paul

Chatter is just way too sensitive, and defensive, on the subject of anything about America(ns).

My apologies for saying “Mike”. I’m surprised that it hadn’t happen earlier. Some mental problem on my part. Something about both being Brits with a 4 letter name.
Ok, to lighten up the subject....

Don't know if less, just different and involving more people -- 1 driver, 1 shooter, and 3-5 guys pushing the car.

RE: Horrific New Orleans conditions and seeming incompetence. Unlike the mayor of NYC who responded immediately to rescue/recovery after 9-11-2001 (including a well manned emergency triage unit that was set up and ready to go just a few hours after the WTC collapse, but was, alas, unneeded!), it seems the mayor of New Orleans has spent more time complaining and finger pointing than to do anything useful. The governor of the state of Louisiana hasn't been much better. The feds. have kept hands off initially until the incompetence of the city & state governments became apparent -- are more involved now.

Next question: rebuild New Orleans or let it as is as a testimony to the folly of trying to maintain a pseudo-Atlantis city under the sea (level)?
It must be a media bias thing, seems the whole world is questioning the reaction time and preparation, or lack thereof.

Not actually *being* there personally, I can only build my personal opinion on what I read and see on news coverage.

If the US government have done all that they could...so be it.

I agree with Camera though, I would expect more efficiency from our government should they have had the pre warning that seemed present in these circumstances.

I see quite a few media outlets backpedaled when they were caught reporting it as the "world's worst natural disaster"....only to be reminded of the tsunami and devastation it caused.

I will stick by my theory that the weather phenomena the world is experiencing is not random and we are heading for biiiiiig trouble where Mother Nature is concerned.

I dont see why these kinds of threads need to be halted....surely adults can have civilised discussions without national pride/grievances getting in the way?

When its all said and done...its a bloody awful tragedy and my thoughts are with all those affected.

Also, Jabber, I think that you cannot compare the 9/11 to this. It was in isolated areas. This is the entire city of over a million plus all the other smaller cities along the coast, divided by flood waters and downed bridges. Jails flooded and mental hospitals flooded, along with everything else. Getting into the area is very difficult besides. I think it looks so simple sitting in our armchairs. I also think the news is feeding off of it. Bad news sells so much better than the good. We really do not know what efforts have been put forth. We only know what the news has chosen to show us. I think laying blame is very counter-productive.

5 would be better. They’ll need the extra muscle to bounce the car up and down.

Good point. I purpose Mardi Gras be moved to Vail, Colorado.

So true. Kind of like the original topic and the rumors of gas shortages.

Latest news bulletin from New Orleans: “STOP PRAYING – SEND MONEY!”

It is pretty impressive how quick companies respond with donation efforts. I just saw on Google they have a donation link. A couple of days ago I was in Petco (pet store chain in the States) and they already had software installed to donate money by rounding up odd penny purchases to the nearest nickel (a $25.01 purchase could donate 4 cents). Grant it, not a lot of money, but it impressed me. (P.S. I so wish they stop using pennies for currency – they’re OK for screwdrivers or making wishes in fountains).

I just realized yesterday that this is Labor (not the maturity kind) Day weekend. Gas prices always increase (in the States) to pay for the additional gas production caused by everyone trying to get away from it all. EVERYONE – stay at home and read a book, or have a romp under the covers with your significant (or even insignificant) other.

I bet there's a lot of people in New Orleans that wish they could. Spending a 3 day weekend in the Astrodome leaves something to be desired.

But, nickels develop much, much faster. Pennies are currency challenged – and heavy. Try buying something at a self-checkout using 1000 pennies.
I would not ty to use 1000 pennies..unless I was not happy with you! However, I will pick them up if someone drops them on the ground and walks away because it is too much troule. My grandbaby bought her first bike from pennies saved.

I would venture to say you are correct about the people left in New Orleans. I just saw where they loaded three cruise ships with some of them. Neat idea!

It does sound like a good idea. On the down side, if I were in New Orleans, I think I would have seen enough water to last a lifetime.
