Excellent point. Hadn't thought of that.quote:I just wish our National Guard troops were home in the USA, taking care of business in the disaster areas.
Talking about pets (well, no one was but that never stopped anyone), don’t forget about all those little critters in New Orleans. Apparently the shelters aren’t allowing animals, so any dog, cat, horse, parrot, chinchilla, ferret and what-not lovers can always make donations to help them out.
Interesting..help them out what? I would assume that any left behind might not have made it and probably are not on a rescue list, right?Don't know. I did see one lady that had three dogs with her. I don't recall where she was staying, but she said it was all she had left.
Help? Shelter, food, medical attention, kitty litter, dry newspapers in the birdcages, desalination kits for the gold fish. Parrots might want to take a shower. The left behind might be roaming around, maybe even scared. Three dogs with a lady? I guess the dogs could always eat the lady.quote:Originally posted by Mrs.M.:

Don't know much about animals.I am concerned with people first. Yes, rick I have donated. I also would like to see people like perhaps the Kennedys, Winfrey, Bushes, etc. donate. Perhaps they have silently.
I prefer those that make silent donations. It always bugs me when they brag about their donations. But, since one never knows who made the silent donations, one never knows whom to prefer. Another advantage to making anonymous donations is that you don’t get on every donation mailing/email/telephone list. So, how much did you donate?quote:Originally posted by Mrs.M.:

Regarding people first, pets second – there was a survey pertaining to which would someone save first, a drowning pet or a drowning stranger. As I remember it, if someone’s pet is in the water with you and you’re a stranger, you better get acquainted with the pet owner in a real hurry.

Sad
As to the amount I donated..at least as much as you, I'm sure.
I pray that's the case.quote:Originally posted by Mrs.M.:

Honest? I'll be darned.
For anyone that might be interested, most local Churches including your Methodist Churches are organizing help of one sort or another for the Gulf Coast. I have decided to volunteer at the Merci center for a Mission team. I am not sure if this works out of NC, but here is a # 1 888-440-9167 There is going to so much help needed from packing supplies to cleaning and building.

As for my other comment, I simply was wary about a post that basically demanded an explanation of Americans as to how they managed to let such a catastrophe occur, as well as another quip. From there I simply see such a discussion sliding downhill.
There were some reports about shooting at helicopters (maybe another one of those bad rumors), so perhaps there’s some interest, in that aspect. Sounds like Mike is just looking for collaboration with BBC.
Hnh? Who? where? how? OK - I'll admit it - I haven't bothered to read all this post, just spotted my name here!
FWIW, I can take the BBC or leave 'em!
Just call me Bozo Brains:quote:OK - I'll admit it - I haven't bothered to read all this post, just spotted my name here!

My apologies for saying “Mike”. I’m surprised that it hadn’t happen earlier. Some mental problem on my part. Something about both being Brits with a 4 letter name.

Ah! I see. A common mistake, Rick.

Mrs M, will you please, please get rid of this for it rouses me to a frenzy of dynamic apathy each time I read it.
Try "If I offend you - tough. If you offend me, I'll be round tomorrow to put the boot in!"
Much more in keeping with modern times!

But more harmful to the soul in the end times.
Sorry camera, no. There is nothing personal in it. It is how I feel and I have right to that. Don't read it.
Just watched a video of two cops looting a Walmart after the hurricane - I never did rate the US cops...

Same topic, different storm! It seems that hurricane Rita is shaping up to be just as nasty if not worse than Katrina. The path & pattern of Rita is remarkably similar to Katrina. If appears landfall will be further to the west in Texas. It is a sad irony that several New Orleans refugees that were evacuated to TX may need to AGAIN flee a storm!? They're probably getting a complex of some type!
Gas prices in central PA spiked to about $3.199/gal in the aftermath of Katrina. They have slowly sagged to about $2.659 as of today, but I noticed some outlets have raised prices today -- jitters about the damage Rita could do to the refineries & drilling rigs in the TX area presumably. Here we go again?!?
Also, after the poor preparation/response in New Orleans, there seems to be a much more serious evacuation/preparation for Rita.

Our fuel prices shot up last week to about £1 for petrol, now have gone back down to about 91p as they were about 2 months ago.
Is diesel cheaper than petrol in USA?
It is generally much cheaper in Europe.
Not here, though, although more mpg and cheaper servicing do mean that I would only have an 'oil burner' for a 'modern' car - never a petrol one. 55mpg is not to be sneezed at!

Good news, at least locally: The current gas pumps will only accommodate 4 numbers. So, either the max will be $9.999 or they’ll have to drop the last “9”. I’m all for dropping that last decimal as a gas station has yet to give me $.001 back in change. Don’t know of any other commodity that is priced to more decimal places than the currency allows.
More (possible) good news: Gas may finally be more expensive than bottled water. Don’t quote me – I would hate to build up anyone’s expectations.
Bad news: It is getting progressively harder to round off the final purchase to the closest $.05. It use to take me a couple of taps on the gas pump to jump a penny. Now, I find I need to have a gap of 2 pennies. At $9.999, it might be a good test of one’s reflexes to hit the next 5-cent total. They might even want to add that to the drivers test to determine a person’s reaction time.
Suggestion for U.S.: Switch to metric for pricing at the gas pumps. It won’t make any difference in the final bill, but it will seem like the price of gas has gone down. Also, it will make it easier to round to the nearest 5-cents.
