First off, I don’t eat gas so the price of it will have absolutely no impact on my caloric intake. Second off, people in depression because they stay at home need to move. They can use horses to move. Third off, take a bus.

live in a small town in Indiana U.S.A. and our gas is $3.33 right now.

I regularly pay 90p+ per litre and if my calculations work out correctly that is £3.57 to the US gallon (in some areas it is now over £1 a litre).

£3.57 is $6.47 per US gallon

And you think you are hard done by?

Paul

P.S. Can any American here present explain why we are getting these dreadful third world pictures of people pleading for some/any government assistance? What happened to civil defence planning? I grant you, it may be media bias, but we are getting relayed an abysmal tale of officialdom totally unable to cope.
The BBC view
This was the worst hurricane ever known, in terms of the deadly storm surge. The unique topography of New Orleans made it particularly horrific. The best laid evacuation plans were still ignored by some people, while others could not get out in time, but that does not really matter now, as carnage is still carnage.

More importantly, the tone of the post that reaised these questions is combative. I urge that we not prolong this aspect of the discussion, as I predict it will get out of hand.

Pardon? Where do you come up with this stuff, Chatter? “Tone”? “Combative”? If it gets “out of hand”, posts like yours are sure to fuel it. [head shaking .gif]
Yes, Chatter, I agree with you about the hurricane. My prayers certainly go out to them. However, I was really only commenting on the gas prices rising so quickly. To the people out of the US, it is not the amount, it is the quick rise which I am not sure was justified, but perhaps I am not correct. At any rate our prices rose about every hour for the past 24 hours. Last night there was a shortage, but since the price has leveled, there seems to be plenty. Amazing! BTW, we have no bus service in our town of aprox.40,000 nor horses.WinkIf your job is set to the cost of living, it probably does not bother you, however, many people are not so lucky and it eats tremendously into their paycheck.

Sorry, that is an unfounded rumor. Completely untrue.
Why do people like to spread false rumors (“false rumors” is probably redundant)? Doesn’t anyone ever spread good rumors? I’ve got one – the world IS NOT coming to an end, at least for today. In 5 billion years the sun is going to blow, so you’ll want a good sunscreen (but, that’s another bad rumor, and something you can put off for a while).

Carpool, hitchhike, roller shakes, scooter, golf cart, hybrid? I *am* having a hard time visualizing a hybrid low-rider.

Put a trailer on the motorcycle?

Such negativity.
Mrs. M, I meant that there are no rations, gas station closures or food deliery restrictions going on in South Florida right now. (As I write this, I am in Miami.) Yes, there are some places that are raising prices (though nothing like what happened in Atlanta 48 hours ago), but there are no restrictions. Maybe someone's convenience store/gas station stated that that particular shop was out until next week, but that is not what is occurring here right now.

As for my other comment, I simply was wary about a post that basically demanded an explanation of Americans as to how they managed to let such a catastrophe occur, as well as another quip. From there I simply see such a discussion sliding downhill.

Yes, it appears to be sliding down that hill. “Demanded”? You sure have a flair for the dramatic.

There were some reports about shooting at helicopters (maybe another one of those bad rumors), so perhaps there’s some interest, in that aspect. Sounds like Mike is just looking for collaboration with BBC.
