Puppy,
Here is another auction for you to play with. In THIS one, the winning bid = max.bid.

Puppy,
Here is another interesting auction. This auction has 24 bids (your stated max.) and has a reserve not met condition. Does that affect your program? I would think it shouldn't.
If I keep this up, soon everyone will know what trinkets I'm sniping!

Puppy,
I really like how your program turned out. In the first auction, there's an interesting anomaly. I'm sure your spreadsheet calculated the correct result, though. At bid #13, ebay allows an increase at LESS than the current bid increment. Interesting! I wonder if the bidder intended that?
Of course, I DID think of something that you could do that could be considered an enhancement. It would be neat if you could have at the very bottom of the list a line: under bidder column if would say, "END OF AUCTION" and then have the end of auction date & time under the date & time column. Yeah, I know! -- Much easier said than done!
I noticed you were able to post the 2nd fairly soon after the first. Did that include the processing time in between, or had you processed BOTH before posting? If it included processing time -- WAY TO GO! I'm impressed! Of course this means I won't need to do my "Once upon a time" stories anymore!
Nice job, Puppy!

I agree, I think it is correct. It would make sense that the same algorithm that allows one to WIN an auction at less than a full bid increment, would also allow you to hold the winning bid at less than a full bid increment, because it is the same thing, right?

The 24 bid auction above >> Click << ended at $87.00 'Reserve not met'.
Doesn't the current price jump to the max bid until the reserve is met ?
There seems to be allot of bids that should have been rejected as invalid (to low).
What am I missing ?
Jabber, I may need your skills !

No... it doesn't. Seems proxy bids are still used even below the reserve.
I guess to help hide the amount?
You had your chance Jabber.
...in reserve auction.
Puppy Posted:
You alluded to this claim about reserve auctions in an earlier post, which I didn't address. The current bid jumping to your max bid if less than reserve does not seem to happen in all ebay catagories. The one catagory I KNOW that happens is vehicles on Ebay Motors. It may in fact work that way on ALL things posted on Ebay Motors. There may be other ebay catagories it works that way, also, but NOT ALL.
As you can see from auction 24, it behaves just like a non-reserve auction with the addition of the "Reserve not met" comment next to the winning bid. It would make sense if ebay was to change ALL reserve auctions to behave the way they do on eBay Motors -- and that change may happen sometime.
The problem with the old way, there has to be at least TWO bidders in order to win a reserve auction! A single bidder can bid increasing amounts 10 times, yet the bid will never exceed the "reserve not met" opening bid! In the newer (ebay Motors) style reserve auction, a single bidder can bid against the reserve, which acts sorta like a "proxy bidder" raising the auction bid amount until the reserve is finally exceeded.
Make sense? If anyone has additional info re: the current status of ebay reserve auctions, I'd certainly like to hear it.

Hi Puppy!
Thanks for extending my understanding of reserve auctions!
The difference in the old style & newer style of reserve auctions appears to be how ebay displays reserve-not-met bids. In the old style, IF THE MAX BID IS LESS THAN THE RESERVE, the LOWEST bid to exceed all competitive bids (similar to a non-reserve auction) is displayed. In the new style reserve auction, IF THE MAX BID IS LESS THAN THE RESERVE, the MAX bid is displayed. In BOTH types, if the MAX bid EXCEEDS the reserve, the winning bid then jumps to the LOWEST bid at or above the reserve which exceeds all competitive bids, just like a normal non-reserve auction.
Is this perception accurate? If this is correct, it just complicates how your spreadsheet needs to work - to be able to handle 2 different reserve auctions. OR, you could just put your foot down, and say, "I don't do reserves!"

Puppy,
Feel like crunching this thru your program?
> BidHist.<
It's an auction that I scheduled a $20 snipe 5 days ago when the winning bid was $7! In the last few hours, the bidders went nuts!
The auction includes a tie and a 1-second UNSUCCESSFUL snipe (not mine)!
Funny thing - there's another seller that has basically the same thing for a $25 BIN!
(Giving Puppy at chance to show off the program!)

Hey Puppy!
Auction-21 now looks good! Here's another auction you might want to grind in your spreadsheet. Key points of interest of this auction:
1) 50 bids (I assume you'd only look at the last 24)
2) Winning bid = max bid of the winning bidder (win by less than bid increment, therefore max bid is known)
3) Not an issue in the data analysis, but is not blackman displaying the behaviour of THE CLASSIC nibbler!?! Rick, don't blow a fuse!

Just for another twist, does your program KNOW when the MAX bid IS known?

Puppy!
Now that you got the calcs figgered out, your spreadsheet just gets better & better! Now you can handle up to 50 bids!?!
There IS one glaring flaw with it though, that bugs me to no end -- >I< didn't come up with it!
One thing that surprised me with the Auction-50 analysis -- your program kept the underscore-suffix for blackman. I thought from earlier posts your program stripped out those. No bid deal, looks good either way.
I'm dying for some one to come in here with a "Why didn't I win?" type question. No one has since we started working on this little project. I'll keep me eye out for interesting bid histories if you'd like.
Don't have an example off hand, but I've seen it RARELY that more than one bid will be registered in the bid history at THE VERY SAME DATE&TIME. Would your program hiccup on that or be able to handle it?
(Applause for Puppy's program!!)

Thanks Jabber,
Max bids is now 99.
I DID say I strip underscores out. My mistake. It was the '@' and '.' that gave my sheet problems. You're right... it is annoying. I saw that... just didn’t do anything about it.
Suggestions? Take them out, or also delete everything after? How about everything after if it's character position is 6 or more?
OR...
Would it be better yet to just chop everything off earlier? It's set at 15 now. Would 10 be better?

Please excuse the newie question: am I correct that the source of the data here is the bid history from ebay after auction closes?
happy bidding

Hi Dave, This is my program output for the above auction. I pull the data off eBay, so no need to enter data yourself.
The other 'test for bugs' is the actual amount of the high bid is known.
(I don't have to say 'or more' in the heading.)

I've never seen that level of detail - but I really haven't looked either.
If it's available, could something like this report be an option on AS? Type in an auction # and presto!

Data is from the bid history. On an ended auction the bidder, amounts, and times are displayed by clicking on the number of bids. The day/time order is sorted and last two columns are calculated by a lotus spreadsheet.

could something like this report be an option on AS?
Puppy, on getting a chance to use the spreadsheet for an auction other than mine!
It's also nice that others recognize the value of it, too. It would be nice if AS could build it in to their system, but THEN that would be something ELSE that would need to be updated whenever ebay makes a change! Then somebody would post a complaint that the AS bid analysis program isn't working correctly-what-kinda-piece-o-s@#t-program-is-this?!
As long as you stick around, they don't need to incorporate it. I think if Sara were to throw a few free snipes your way occasionally, I think that would be appropriate!

Well... some of what I did was YOUR idea.
How does 20% sound?
But, if I get paid, it's a job. It might not be as much fun anymore.

Hey Puppy!
Interested in grinding an auction through your spreadsheet? Data >HERE<
This was an auction I was watching, just to see what it would go for. Ended up NOT meeting reserve. It was interesting in that while there were 55 bids, there weren't that many bidders, but several persistant nibblers.
This auction also revealed to me that eBay has apparently CHANGED how they handle bids on e-Motor reserve auctions. In the recent past, if a bid was below the reserve, the current bid would go all the way up to the max proxy bid. Now it seems that the current bid is set to the next bid increment above the 2nd highest max bid as it does for any other non-reserve auction. A step back, in my opinion!
Thought you might like to do some number crunching! I don't think you've done this many bids before, did you?

3 minute turn around?!? I'm impressed!
Is there a bug at bid #3? Same bidder bidding self up? Later toward the end, multiple bids from same bidder were handled correctly.
