I'm trying to buy 'er indoors an Ipod Mini (in pink) and found one from a seller just about 4km from where I live. Price was good so I thought I'd save on the excessive P&P (25 quid). Interestingly the saving was only about a fiver for collection - I guess the other £20 covers fees and expenses as, judging by the guy's neg feedbacks, he certainly doesn't splash out on packaging and recorded delivery. Suddenly the bargain I was after was the same price that you can find on http://www.kelkoo.co.uk !

I got her one elsewhere (an unwanted present) so that's her sorted out.

The problem with Kelkoo & its Price Runner rival is that they offer a very limited selection of retailers. The bargain they offer is not infact what it seems - its the cheapest from a few.

Many of the sites offered up tend to be uncompetitive multiples, or increasingly these days, the internet names of high street shops (Drill down to the bottom of terms & conditions and note ownership - then go onto the Companies House Register and check who really owns them!)

For example digital cameras on ebay offered new from Hong Kong come in with an extremely attractiive base price. However, add their often expensive postage costs, the fact that VAT (duty is a very small percentage, contrary to what most people think) is added to the original cost PLUS the postage & duty, then the Post Offices levies what is laughingly called an "administrative fee" (£8 - £20) and the bargain suddenly vanishes.

Couple that to the fact that the importers won't touch the good with a barge pole (why should they - British law says the retailer is responsible!)and the disadvantages of buying new through overseas channels is diminished. Another problem is the exceedingly short life cycle of goods, the unavailability of spare parts within six months of purchase and suddenly, a conventional sshop that retains your right of legal redress becomes increasingly attractive.

Me? I now go in to major retailers like Jessops, brandish the cheapest ad I can find for the product and they normally match it!

My feeling is that the only true bargains are the ones you create for yourself.
This past week I won an auction for a heavy item. It's cast iron and weighs 58 pounds. I e-mailed the seller before EOA and he quoted me $46.48 to ship it (within the US). I put in a snipe even though the shipping was a little steep. After the auction closed he told me shipping would be $120.72!! I've shipped big heavy car parts across the country for much less than that. I refused to pay that much for shipping and the seller said he'd send it for what he quoted earlier, but he wasn't happy because he didn't think he'd made enough money off of the item.

Then a few days after he thanked me for the quick Paypal payment in the positive feedback, he e-mailed me to say he hadn't gotten the payment (non-paying bidder). I e-mailed back saying I have the Paypal e-mail receipt and the payment shows as claimed on his end, and I planned to open a Paypal investigation. Within minutes he found the payment! Hopefully it'll arrive soon.

The $120.72 would have brought the price up to what he'd originally paid for it new so that he could get all his money back on it.

Sellers who try to make their money on shipping are a reeeal pain. Mad
The widget is here! (doing a happy little tap dance) It's something I've been wanting for a long time. Two of the bolts holding the base to the baseboard are missing, but that's hardly even worth mentioning. I probably have replacements in the shed. Smile

He paid $32.42 to ship it USPS and used small empty used boxes and scraps of styrofoam inside the main box for padding, so he didn't spend anything on packing materials. I'm debating whether or not to e-mail the seller and tell him it got here. If I do he might ask for feedback, and after the shipping charge situation I'd rather just forget about leaving feedback.
Hi Lexie,
I probably should, but am just glad that the transaction is over and the item is here. If I do decide to leave feedback, I'll wait 90 days so that a fairly low feedback seller can spend three months wondering if his perfect feedback is safe. (It's payback time for all the stress he caused me!) Big Grin

This forum really needs to add an evil smiley face to the selection.
Same problem - like Falcon Gal I think the answer is to try & take a strong line!

Wanted $22 for international shipping on a camera. I wrote and politely asked if he could send it economy surface from the US (Price under $10 - probably $8.70) I then tried to take away any sort of "bad feelings" by saying it was directed at excessive mail charges by the USPS and not at depriving him of his "handling" charge and I would pay a reasonable amount.

Back came the reply - sure no problems, I'll post it surface - my standard shipping charge is still $22 as I have to spend time "queuing for the green customs slip"

I then went into overdrive, as you do, saying $22 - $8.70 = $79 an hour if you just spend 5 minutes queueing.

After several fairly heated emails, he's come down to $18 (as he had just spent 40 minutes queuing in his post office) so I don't really have much more choice other than grin & bear it.

Final equation - $12 camera + $9 postage + $9 "packing charge" + (& this is still to come) - what HM Customs & Excise levy on top!

Ah well I could go back to collecting match box labels!

I’m of the opinion that members (people in general) aren’t really looking for opinions, but confirmation of their own opinions. But, if that opinion is wrong, here are some opinions that you might find as inspirational as I did:

That position is SO LAME & LUDICROUS it is amazing anybody would have the nerve to propose it! Roll Eyes Most post offices have those customs slips available for the taking, and WHY is this guy only getting ONE? I have several in my shipping supplies so I have it whenever I need one. BTW, on economy surface shipping, while I prefer not, I'll do it (it takes SO LONG! 3-6 months! Eek). On a $8.70 charge, I'd round up to the next dollar or only $9.00 as my s&h charge. So....wanna buy something from me??? Big Grin Wink
Hi Guys, I have a bit of a dilemma after reading all of the comments on post and packing and "reasonable" charges and I am looking for a bit of advice from them what knows. (And at this point I must offer my thanks to Rick and his drunken dog whose name I think was Betty Ford for there help with my last little problem)
I live in a little village out in the sticks and we don’t have a post office or village shop or a bus service, so when it comes to post and packing I have to drive 5 miles to the local supermarket and relieve them of some of there cardboard boxes, return home package it up using old newspaper as a packer to stop the item rattling about inside the box, Then comes the packing tape ( I had to pay for this) then its back in the car and off in the opposite direction from the supermarket to the post office in the next village and pay the post office to take over the delivery process.
So my question is how much is it worth for all my time, fuel costs, tape, string, brown paper etc etc (well you get the idea)
Do I charge my time and effort at minimum wage plus 25 pence per mile or should I just give it all for free.
I am not being facetious because I am also peeved about post and packing (the hardest one to swallow was a charge of £4.00 for the delivery of an e-book…. Duhhh!)
I am now standing in front of my pc with a large bucket ready to catch the hordes of replies that I am expecting
Steve

Ps I have had the most outrageous question on something I was selling and if you would like to have a look please peep at item number 7162745143 on ebay.co.uk
To save others the bother of looking it up, I repeat it here because I think you have given him or her a classic "put down". Well Done!

Q: Do you not believe this should go to the dump? It is dangerous, and is in extremely bad condition. Get rid of it!

A: What a bad mannered, self opinionated, interfering know-it-all you are! First it isn't dangerous! The holes in the bed are about 5 mm across and can be repaired by supertramp. The bottom of the legs are replaceable (again by supertramp) And the stitching is a simple job for anyone with a bit of skill with a needle and thread. Second to take something like this to the dump is irresponsible bordering on criminal. The man made parts (bed, pads, filling and ties) are non biodegradable and would sit in a landfill for the foreseeable future. You obviously don’t believe in recycling and are quite likely to be someone who doesn't care about the world that we all have to live in. Take care of your own petty bitching little life and leave me alone!

As to postage, I think you have got to consider the fact that sellers who post high packing charges get less response to their items. I have just looked at a small lens in Luxembourg and he wants $22 for postage. After a brief exchange of emails, he simply said his Postal service was expensive. Consequently I'll not be bidding.

As long as you are fair, I don't think people mind and will pay for a good packing job. Taking a special round trip to the Supermarket would appear not to be in the "fair category" if you are trying to charge it out on a cost per mile basis!

Immediately I would say, if you know you are going to sell things shortly, collect the boxes with your shopping!

However, if you said to me, "I buy boxes in and charge them out at cost to ensure that your parcel arrives safely", thats a completely different matter.

You can buy boxes in quite economically (flat packed) in small quantities from suppliers and these + loads of bubble wrap indicate you are making a charge for a professional service. I resent it when people charge excessively for packing and it arrives in the free supermarket box!

I guess bitching is no longer filtered.

Tappit,

You probably already thought of this (noticed that didn’t stop me from dribbling on), but this forum represents a small percentage of ebay users. First off, those that typically come to a sniping forum are buyers. There are some that do “some” selling, but buying has a lot more experience on this forum. Now, we do occasionally get the upset seller that comes on the forum and says that he wishes all snipers would “rot in hell” for sniping his auctions, but they are fortunately in the minority, although they definitely get a warm reception. Being buyers and doing what buyers do, they will always say they want the best price possible. But, the truth isn’t what they say, but what they do. So, other sellers might have better experiences in the “real world”.

Also, this is a forum for snipers. Now, snipers are a unique breed (small percentage of the buyers). They wouldn’t be paying AS a fee unless they expected to get the item cheaper than without sniping. The fact that they are competitive enough to snipe also impacts the type of advice you’ll receive here.

With those disclaimers out of the way, time to take on my “self opinionated, interfering know-it-all” role (something that most everyone on this forum, other than AS staff, indulges in).

Personally, I like sellers that have high shipping and handling. I figure that it discourages some/lots-of buyers from participating in the auction, which discourages the emotionalism, which discourages bidding wars. If I see something that I’m willing to spend $400 for, and the seller is charging $100 s&h, then I figure that $300 should be my top bid. Not sure how many others feel that way, so I doubt I represent the market place.

I’m a strong believer in the seller passing their costs onto the buyer. If they don’t, they won’t be a seller for long. Hell, I don’t even get upset when a seller makes a profit on me (I know – radical thinking), but I do get a little worried when they want to name their first-born “Rick”.

If the amount of shipping and handling is disclosed on the auction, then I figure the buyer has been warned, and that’s that. Unfortunately, I’ve seen too many people on this forum look at the actual shipping costs once they’ve received the goodies and feel that the difference between actual and billed was “unfair, immoral, and criminal” and get on the forum and piss’n moan.

Now, you could go into an explanation as to why you are charging for gas, your time, and a couple of beers to recuperate from the 5 mile drive to the supermarket, and there maybe someone else besides myself that would find that perfectly acceptable, but then again, considering the “outrageous question” you already got on your auction, do you really feel all that lucky? (my compliments for adding that Q & A to your listing)

I’m not a seller (it’s my bad attitude), but according to someone that does this full time, they suggest the lowest (painfully low) starting price and handling so as to get more people interested, and let the “If *they* want it then *I* must want it” mentality kick in.

Boozer just said, “Hi! . . . hiccup.”
Rick,
You credit me with a much deeper thought process than I actually have. (Imagine Homer Simpson looking attentively at Marge while a cartoon balloon in his head dribbles the word doh'nuts) I didn't realise that this was such a specialist buying forum.
I must apologise for bringing up silly sellers questions that didn't really need answering (Because the answer was always "whatever the market will stand)
I like to sell, and it's even better if I can make a profit but it isn't a matter of life and death (except when driving my 1958 Rolls Royce powered Austin Champ to the post office) and I should hope you are getting a hint of the slightly eccentric English man here.
I also like to buy all kinds of strange stuff as cheep as possible and proudly display it until I get fed up with it and back on eBay it goes.
I snipe for fun and sometimes I even buy stuff that I expressly don’t want just because its cheep. (Any idea what I can do with 144 glow in the dark necklaces?) I have several eBay accounts and have even bought stuff off my self because I didn't like the high bidders name or attitude.
FX (ding dong)
Oh hello there are men at the door and look they are wearing Acme Tent and straight jacket Corporation coats. I shall be going soon

Ps send all my love to Betty booze.
Tappit, the question is a hoot!
" Do you not believe this should go to the dump? It is dangerous, and is in extremely bad condition. Get rid of it!"

And Tappit, BTW, bidding against yourself is a TOS on eBAY, I believe! Wink

Here’s the actual text:

Of course, unlike speeding, which a few people have been known to do, ebay doesn’t have radar and the cops don’t ALWAYS give you a warning.

"smart mouthed" versus ???
Ok Rick. The Mustang ranch is up north and was taken over by the IRS a while back. The ones I was mentioning are located in and around Pahrump. That is about 60 miles west of Lost Wages.
The Chicken Ranch and the one next door, Sherry's are owned by the same person. Sherry's madam was the one that wrote the best seller "Madam". She was a writer before she became a madam. Cherry Patch and others are just a couple of miles off of the highway from Vagas to Reno and just Northwest of Vagas. There are a couple more that I can't think of the names of at the moment that are just south of Beatty on that same Hwy. There is the Cotton Picker for another, etc. That does not mention the ones just a ways East of Reno on 80. There is also a great little gift shop at The Chicken Ranch.

Soooo Rick, seems as if your education is just a tad short Big Grin
