In 1863, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November Thanksgiving Day in order to bolster the Union’s morale.

In 1939 U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt shifted the day of Thanksgiving from the last Thursday in November to one week earlier. Retail merchants had petitioned the president to make the change to allow for an extra week of shopping between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Many Americans objected to the change in their holiday customs and continued to celebrate Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of the month. Roosevelt’s political opponents in Congress also opposed the break with tradition and dubbed the early holiday “Franksgiving.” In May 1941 Roosevelt admitted that he had made a mistake and signed a bill that established the fourth Thursday of November as the national Thanksgiving holiday, which it has been ever since.

The first national annual Thanksgiving of 1863 was not officially observed by the United States military. Providing a special Thanksgiving dinner for the troops was beyond the capabilities of the Commissary.

Thanksgiving 1864 did not go similarly unrecognized. The Union League Club of New York City launched a public campaign to provide Thanksgiving dinner for Union soldiers and sailors.

And as for kissing frogs make sure you know if they are the poisionous kind so your lips dont start to swell and you need to be rushed to the emergency room and...... I can't wait to dig in to the food tomorrow. I will get to make my apple cranberry pie!! We will play RISK and end up either toppling the board or renewing those old family RISK arguements.. I get to make my cranberry orange sauce from scratch.... Yummmm.... and those candied Yams and Big ol Free range turkey cooked like a beercan chicken. Best of all there will be leftovers enough to make my Favorite stuffing sandwich for friday's lunch.

Hi Teracus,
It sounds like you like to cook from scratch, too! Big Grin I have pumpkins in the oven to use to make pie, but this batch is taking forever to cook. And there's plenty of pastry wheat to grind into flour. In a few minutes I'll be going to a friend's house to pick up some fresh eggs. Big Grin Of course, the eating's the best part! Razz But...we gotta wait until tomorrow. Big Grin
Hopefully we'll get to watch the parades tomorrow instead of watching a bunch of grown men chase a football. Roll Eyes Oh, well. Have fun playing RISK.
Good afternoon Mrs M. I see you are all ready for the Holliday. I am not as relaxed as you seem to be but as of 10 am tomorrow I will be ready to relax too!!! Ahhhh the roasting of pumpkins smelll mmmmmmmmmmmmm. I have always wanted to roast a duck inside a turkey fill the duck with orange slices. put a light sage garlic butter under the skin of the turkey and slow roast. but the only problem is you need to start with a 25 to 30 lb turkey and that alone serves a small army. Seeing we are having about six for dinner it would be a lot of leftovers. Anyone have a good dish you are making?
