But, don’t leave home without us’ credit cards.

Of course, the “us” doesn’t mean Aussies and Brits, nor Canadians, nor Native Indians, nor slaves, nor ...

But, I’m always happy to get a paid holiday.
I am happy you are not a slave. We don't have slaves in the US and have not had for many, many years. Some countries certainly enslave their people.....Indian, well, that is not so bad today. I happen to know and am a friend of some well educated Native Americans. I would never put their people down. Many people spend a lot of time proving their Indian heritage. As for the paid holiday...hmmm , guess you have to have a job first, right?

You must not have had children.

Well, I guess “not so bad today” is something to be proud of. Yep, “My country’s not so bad today. I’ve seen worse.”

I had a feeling you’d say something. Unlike some, I try to avoid being capricious with my choice of words, and statements (there’s the second hint – should I leave bread crumbs?). What do you think, I’m just living on Mumsie’s billions (more hints?)? [throw in a big grin and a winky]
I have no idea how you live or care! Why should I?
Yes, I have four children and have raised a couple of grands and am raising a great. I do not enslave them!! Nor, do they enslave me!! We have a very loving, caring, sharing relationship!

Don't think I can worry about the past of our country, rick. Our future is much more important. I was not there and cannot change anything. I do know that today we all can succeed if we try without handouts.Very few succeed this way; most succeed by their own endeavor. We can all make changes if we give some effort to it and not sit around quoting and misquoting. It takes work.

And no, I am not throwing you or anyone bread crumbs. I was speaking of myself. I am retired!! Roll Eyes
Learning about agape love is good.

No one said this country was perfect, but it is still the land of choice for the millions of newcomers who continue to risk their lives to reach here each year, and many other nations who continue to emulate so many aspects of our society.

Ignore the naysayers, Mrs. M. They are so misguided, they cannot even tolerate a simple Memorial Day greeting from you, without turning it into something it was never intended to be, instead of simply saying thank you. That is their mania.
Chatter, I replied to Mrs. M's post about Native Americans. I've lived and taught on one of the reservations. I deleted my post because you'd apparently misread or misconstrued something in it as being against wishing someone a happy Memorial Day or as being a naysayer. Nobody who's read my previous posts in this form would accuse me of that. If you choose to see yourself as the defender of right and are looking for someone to prove yourself against, look a little harder. I'm not the one.

I don't think he was referring to you. I read your post, and I think Chatter had someone else in mind.
Some people simply need to experience living in some other countries like I have. I would gladly give my life to keep our country free and I have given it in some capacity. A lot goes on to keep it that way that many are not aware of. We just sit back like fat cats and suck it in! No comment asked for or needed.

Falcon, Chatter did not mean you!
I can’t read Chatter’s mind, and maybe he’ll explain, but I tend to agree with Mrs. M. I think the plurals were more for drama.

Christine, I reread your post, and there’s no way he intended that last post of his to include you.

Very nice! And very clean! Did you already clean it up??

My eBay addiction made me collect things we had in the house when I was young ... I now have over a dozen 'cactus lamps' (do a search on 'cactus craft') and I bought a replacement for an old clock in the kitchen - my sister almost had a heart attack when she saw it, I think she thought she was time traveling! Then I found an alarm clock that my grandparents used to have ... believe me, this sucker could wake the dead!

The only radio we had when I was little was my Uncle's - and I haven't ever seen it on eBay. It was a horrible salmon colored bakelite thing with a hum that made all but the strongest signals inaudible.

I’m not sure this is still the case, but not that long ago (a few years), the computers for the air traffic control system in the U.S. were still using vacuum tubes, and there was only one manufacturer for these tubes in the known universe, or has that gone down the tubes. Any yeas or neys?

More than that, bj! It had been extensively bodged in the 1940s, as an AC-only set with 6 valves, so needed a bare-chassis rebuild to bring it back to the rare item that it is.
Some more bits
That is just a sample - there is a running 8mb .DOC with words and pictures, later to become an article!

Probably just wanted an electrolytic replacing!

Mike, that is really, really nice! I remember having one very similar to that when I was young, but being American, it was probably a Crosley.
Are the tubes good? If not, can you find replacements?

Only 3 out of 11 were present! Valves are no trpblem - there are a few remanufactured in Russia, and all are generally available in UK. Generally, they do not fail that often - other things do! Often smoke caused by ebay idiots that decide to plug something in after giving it a rest of 30 years! Frown

Some hifi buffs insist on valves (and they're made visible as a design feature!) rather than all the hi-tech stuff we have today. I don't understand how vinyl records can sound better than CDs but some of the same buffs (maybe a subset or vice-versa) insist this is the case. Maybe it's the kind of music I listen to? Wink

R2

R2 - the audiophools cause us endless amusement with their oxygen-free speaker cable and bog-standard valves made on a Friday morning with yellow writing. Snake oil is alive and well!
Some vinyl discs are better inasmuch as the actual recordings were better, and have not yet been redone on CD.
Top-end hifi stuff has always used valves - some of it is the one remaining thing that we can manufacture here! There is really no difference in amplifying a small signal to drive a speaker with whatever means.
The main reason for valves being visible is for cooling - not for the valves, but other components.

Here's one of the cactus lamps. They were made by an AZ company (cactus craft) and sold as kits. You can usually get them on eBay for under $15, and they came in a wide variety of styles. The only problem with them is that the shades are *very* melt-able Smile You have to use a really low wattage bulb.

Not that I'm really a 'western' freak, but after collecting about a dozen of the lamps I felt the need for a glass western ceiling shade, and western sheets, and a western comforter ... and then I went totally crazy and bought (two) beds, similar to this
I am glad you started this thread Serenity. Had I not been out of town I would have started it myself. This was the first Memorial Day Service I missed in many years.

I would like to express my appreciation for our nation's veterans.

The very least we can do is take a moment of our time and reflect on the many freedoms made possible by these incredible men and women. As Americans, we owe these individual everything. Because each of them made sacrifices (which included their time, their health, their sanity, or even their lives), we are able to enjoy many freedoms that other countries will never possess. Every Sunday when we go to church, we should thank a vet for our freedom of religion. Every morning when we read the paper, we should thank a vet for our freedom of speech. And every time we see the American flag, we should stand tall and be appreciative to be an American. Our Veterans risked their lives so that generations to come could enjoy a better, stronger version of the America they loved. The least we can do is appreciate and applaud them for their courage.
