You must not have had children.quote:Originally posted by Serenity:
We don't have slaves in the US and have not had for many, many years.
Well, I guess “not so bad today” is something to be proud of. Yep, “My country’s not so bad today. I’ve seen worse.”quote:Originally posted by Serenity:
Indian, well, that is not so bad today.
I had a feeling you’d say something. Unlike some, I try to avoid being capricious with my choice of words, and statements (there’s the second hint – should I leave bread crumbs?). What do you think, I’m just living on Mumsie’s billions (more hints?)? [throw in a big grin and a winky]quote:Originally posted by Serenity:
As for the paid holiday...hmmm , guess you have to have a job first, right?
Not surprising. Those that don’t learn from the past repeat the mistakes. I dare say those in the past felt “no so bad” about the things they were doing.quote:Originally posted by Serenity:
Don't think I can worry about the past of our country, rick.
Chatter, you must get tried of giving Mrs. M. that advice and watching her not follow it, even though she says she will?quote:Originally posted by Chatter:
Ignore the naysayers, Mrs. M.
I don't think he was referring to you. I read your post, and I think Chatter had someone else in mind.quote:Originally posted by Falcon Gal:
Chatter, I replied to Mrs. M's post about Native Americans. I've lived and taught on one of the reservations. I deleted my post because you'd apparently misread or misconstrued something in it as being against wishing someone a happy Memorial Day or as being a naysayer. Nobody who's read my previous posts in this form would accuse me of that. If you choose to see yourself as the defender of right and are looking for someone to prove yourself against, look a little harder. I'm not the one.
Quite a memorable day.quote:Originally posted by Serenity:
I can't believe all this.
I can’t read Chatter’s mind, and maybe he’ll explain, but I tend to agree with Mrs. M. I think the plurals were more for drama.quote:Originally posted by Serenity:
Falcon, Chatter did not mean you!

Just to keep things pleasant, what is everyone planning on doing today (outside the U.S.)? I assume non-Yanks are working?

You restore clocks, and radios. Don't see how they relate to each other, unless radios use to have gears.
quote:Originally posted by Serenity:
Mike, that is interesting. Do you have any pixs of the radio?
I’m not sure this is still the case, but not that long ago (a few years), the computers for the air traffic control system in the U.S. were still using vacuum tubes, and there was only one manufacturer for these tubes in the known universe, or has that gone down the tubes. Any yeas or neys?quote:Originally posted by Serenity:
Are the tubes good? If not, can you find replacements?
Isn’t Google wonderful!quote:

Very nice! And very clean! Did you already clean it up??
Probably just wanted an electrolytic replacing!quote:
The only radio we had when I was little was my Uncle's - and I haven't ever seen it on eBay. It was a horrible salmon colored bakelite thing with a hum that made all but the strongest signals inaudible.

Mike, that is really, really nice! I remember having one very similar to that when I was young, but being American, it was probably a Crosley.
Are the tubes good? If not, can you find replacements?

Some hifi buffs insist on valves (and they're made visible as a design feature!) rather than all the hi-tech stuff we have today. I don't understand how vinyl records can sound better than CDs but some of the same buffs (maybe a subset or vice-versa) insist this is the case. Maybe it's the kind of music I listen to?

I am glad you started this thread Serenity. Had I not been out of town I would have started it myself. This was the first Memorial Day Service I missed in many years.
I would like to express my appreciation for our nation's veterans.
The very least we can do is take a moment of our time and reflect on the many freedoms made possible by these incredible men and women. As Americans, we owe these individual everything. Because each of them made sacrifices (which included their time, their health, their sanity, or even their lives), we are able to enjoy many freedoms that other countries will never possess. Every Sunday when we go to church, we should thank a vet for our freedom of religion. Every morning when we read the paper, we should thank a vet for our freedom of speech. And every time we see the American flag, we should stand tall and be appreciative to be an American. Our Veterans risked their lives so that generations to come could enjoy a better, stronger version of the America they loved. The least we can do is appreciate and applaud them for their courage.
