Ok... I got a bit nervous because this auction ended right on the 1/2 hr and remember reading about ebay being slower during those times... so I upped my lead time from 8 seconds to 12. Thank goodness I didn't up it any further. WHEW!

I bow to the powers of AS! Hallelujah!!

Now I have to decide whether I should just leave my lead time on future snipes at 8 regardless of the closing time... decisions decisions...

I just realized that the significant point here isn't that I beat the bidder by 3 seconds, it's that I beat the auction closing by only 4 seconds! If I hadn't changed my lead from 8 to 12, it may not have made it in at all - regardless of how high my bid! That is just too close for comfort!

Man o man... I need to work on my strategy for lead time... glad I followed my gut this time tho! WHEW AGAIN!

Since you have done your homework, I'm probably telling you something you already know. 8 seconds is what most of us use for "normal" (non-prime time) auctions. At first I was concerned about 5 seconds, but over time I've changed my mind and now use 8 seconds. Someone might out-snipe you, but most likely it was an automated snipe.
dag,

You asked stimulating questions; you helped another new forum member; you made a significant contribution; you've checked out the faq and looks like you used "search" on this forum - all this on your first day on this forum. Steve has been here longer then me, and hopefully he'll comment on this, but I don't remember anyone joining this forum and having such a positive impact on their first day. Smile

My first day I was very timid. But, Steve took me under his "wing", and, as they say, "the rest is history".

We're always looking for "fresh blood" (I wonder where that came from? Vampires? Red Cross?), and fresh ideas. So, I hope we see more of you.

True! Smile
I always get a vicarious thrill out of reading about someone's first successful snipe. I can almost feel that adrenaline rush all over again. "DAYUM," indeed! Thanks for the fun, dagnabitgrabit!

If you follow Rick's advice you won't go far wrong, believe me. Eight seconds is what I use for a lead time, too, with the usual exceptions for certain auction closing times. In Kipling's "The Jungle Book" the customary salutation from the wolfpack was "Good hunting!" So, good hunting! Wink
Geesh guys! I've got tears in my eyes! Feelin da luv! Feeling like Sally Fields here!

You DO realize that I would have quickly gone into lurk-mode if I hadn't received all the wonderful responses (and warm welcome) that I've received. My modus operandi is usually to lurk, because I've found voicing my opinion (and even asking questions) can sometimes lead to flame wars. I don't have the patience or stamina for those kinds of games, so I tend to just not put myself out there much anymore!

So pat yourselves on the back, because if you hadn't taken the time to welcome me, and deal with my questions (which I'm sure have been asked over and over ad nauseum), then I would have likely have retreated by now and quietly figured this stuff out all by myself (and made a lot of mistakes born of ignorance)!

At first glance this auction stuff may seem simple, but in truth if you want to win (or sell) you HAVE to study and research and watch and learn, and over time develop a "winning" strategy!

Obviously, I've found my way by pure chance to a winnning team!

Ok... where's that tissue!? Smile

Dag,

Sorry, couldn't find one. The tissue boxes were my 1st. Maybe someone else can find a female smiley. It sure would help. We've messed that up a bunch of times, and Chatter163 has been called a "she" on 2 different occasions.

I did find this, which I thought was very cute:

New members,

Steve is ONE of the best, if not THE best, punsters we have. I consider myself victorious if I just break-even (which isn't very often) with him in a repartee. But, I enjoy the persiflage (thank goodness for online thesauri), so I take a shot every so often.

Is punning a guy thing, or does everyone enjoy it?

No problem Rick. "I enjoy being a girl" (name that musical!), but I don't have to advertise it. I suppose it WOULD help if I had a more gender-specific nick. We could get into a whole new topic about how certain nicks seem to point to a certain gender...

Now to confuse ya'll further, I thought about putting my real first name as my signature. But... the little eBay auction business we have running from home was originally set up by my sister, Janis, and therefore everything is under her name. For consistency-sake, anything related to the "business," I use her name.

So I'm having a identity crisis signing her name to the emails. Just recently, I started signing BOTH our names, so if I forget and sign my name as Debra by accident, no one will get TOO freaked out! In addition, I set up a completely separate yahoo account for my "personal" email - which includes my subscriptions to mail-lists, groups, and stores related to my Stephen King collection. lol

Now, AS Admins - if you are reading this, do not worry! Both Janis and I are authorized users on the credit card I registered with. I have a card with MY name and she has one with HERS. lol

Sooooo, you can call me Jan, or you can call me Deb, or you can call me Dag, or..... Big Grin

region2,
The CLOSEST I'm coming to this one is to provide the following link (do a find on "Dag"):

THANKS!. I have an Australian associate, and he always likes it when someone can discuss these kind of things. He'll enjoy this.

diva,
I don't get out that often, so you might find me naive. I had never heard of "nick" and I had to look up "pink cigar" and "outed". Good stuff. Don't get me wrong - I enjoy leaving "I do this on ebay", or "I think this about ebay" posts. But I also enjoy having "morning coffee" with Mrs. M and bjt, and enjoy seeing what new challenge Steve is going to throw our way, as I enjoyed "pink cigar".

Good Morning Rick!
Good morning diva!
Good morning Steve!

I have been following your conversations and laughing all the while!
I think based upon that last link Rick, we stick with diva for awhile Wink

How is everyone doing?
I have been working so muh lately, I need to catch up with everyone!

By the way, just so we all know each other a bit better,I too, am a woman. Smile
I think I'll use an all-encompassing noun: Good Morning, Everybody! Wink

According to that site, "dag" as an adjective is pretty descriptive of Diva: "Adjective: A jolly, entertaining and happy sort of person." May we also refer to you as "dag (adj.)", Diva? Big Grin

Not issuing challenges just now. Rick got me doing puns down in "eBay, General" and I have to recover from that first. Razz

P.S. -- Is it "Diva" because you sing well?
quote:
Didn't he sing, "Dang me, dang me, they oughtta get a rope and hang me!"?

Well originally this was sung by Roger Miller... a golden oldie from 1964. Same guy that sang King of the Road. Okay... so I'm dating myself now! I had 45s (probably passed on to me from my older sister) of King of the Road and Dang Me, and goddess knows what else - still may have in some box around here... hmmmmm sounds like something ELSE I could try selling on eBay!! lol

Dang me, dang me, they oughta take a rope and hang me. High from the highest tree-eee. Woman won't you weep for me? Doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo doo doo doo doo! Big Grin

And yes, Steve, the "diva" is for my singing! lalalalalala

And yayup, that IS Robin Williams... relevance unknown - did he sing Dang Me?

Guess my colloquialisms are showing. hehe So did you (Rick was it? - I can't remember who said what!) get "pink cigar," "outed," and hmmmmm what was the other one?... oh "nick"... did you get em figured out?

No one named that musical I made reference to by quoting a song from it: "I enjoy being a girl." Yet Rick knows "Dang Me?" lol

I think "dag" is kinda cute, as long as it isn't something disgusting in Aussie talk. But I'll change my signature to "diva."

Ok... I know I'm missing responding to someone or something! Good morning (evening) to whomever extended greetings... was that BJT?

Sad to hear John Ritter died... so young... heart attack at 55! And Johnny Cash at 71! I had one of HIS 45s somewhere... guess which one!!?

Ok... I'm rambling again... I'm good at that... back to work (whatever that is...). I've got Yahoo instant messenger running, if anyone wants to pop on and say hi... ID is dagnabitgrabit!

Laters all!

Dag

"outed" - booted, kicked out, removed from office.
"nick" - nick name.
"pink cigar" - when one has a baby girl.

"I enjoy being a girl" (name that musical!) - "Flower Drum Song".

Gigi Thank Heaven for Little Girls Lyrics

Thank heaven for little girls
for little girls get bigger every day!

Thank heaven for little girls
they grow up in the most delightful way!

Those little eyes so helpless and appealing
one day will flash and send you crashin' thru the ceilin'

Thank heaven for little girls
thank heaven for them all,
no matter where no matter who
for without them, what would little boys do?

Thank heaven... thank heaven...
Thank heaven for little girls!
I disagree. This is not even close to why we originally made the change. First, we did this because of the 4 (Steve, me, rsmiller40, and bjt) of us. Our change didn't involve new members. Second, the 4 of us were putting out so many different posts on so many different topics and even mixing up the topics, that no one, even us 4 could follow. Third, this topic wasn't started by asking a question, but was a complement to AS. Fourth, and I think this is very important, the topic starter has been enjoying this. Fifth, the progression on this topic is organized. Unlike our "morning socials" which were all over the place. Sixth, the posts that the 4 of us were doing were causing people to complain (3 to 5 new members that were the ACTUAL topic starters).

Rules are helpful guide lines, but they need to have flexibility. New members weren't doing what the 4 of us were. We have some very bright, and entertaining new members and I think this topic is fun.

I'd like to get some input from new members. So don't be bashful, let us know what you think, or if you have something to contribute that will get us giggling again, lets have it.

(I'm betting Steve will post on this again, even though it hasn't returned to sniping) Razz

That's a good point. I remember you, I think it was you, remarked about "fitting in". And, of course, at first you and Mrs. M were not all that happy being "herded down under". Big Grin

I think about the only rule is language, and I hate to say this, but if the filters don't stop it, Sara (AS support) doesn't have a problem.

Being an outspoken new member, would you be willing to share your experiences on other forums, and how you feel about this forum, and so on? The reason I ask is, that us "old regulars" sometime forget what it's like to be a new member. Eek

I had to give this some thought.

I really like the AS forum. It is highly unususal for me to even go INTO a chat room much less join in the conversation.
To be truthful, this is the FIRST TIME I have ever joined in online discussions on a regular basis.

Typically, the established members of other forums I have visited out of curiosity don't even acknowledge when there is someone new in the "room" and won't respond to their comments.
The conversation just seems to flow over them.

The other aspect of online chatting is the acronyms. I don't mind it, I just don't know them.
When someone types a string of capitol letters and others respond to it, I just sit at my keyboard and look like this ---- Confused

I am so impressed with the left-of-center humor and intelligent and polite converation, that I find this forum truly unique and fun!

If you feel all warm and mushy inside, you should Smile
Some of the best reasons this forum is so successful are the contributions of three of its oldest...er,I mean most established members, Yourself, Steve-o and Mrs M.
You are always there to keep the talk going, help a newbie or just make someone laugh!

Thanks!! Smile

Interesting. Diva (aka Dag) made pretty much the same comment.

I hear you on that one. I think the same way, but this is the INFORMATION AGE. A lot of them you can find by searching internet, and there are several "lingo" or "computer lingo" links. I use to have a couple, but no longer. Maybe someone will post a good link for those. If you're ever in doubt about an acronym, at least on this forum, ask. I think sometimes those acronyms are "put out" because the author wants someone to ask. Wink

WELCOME ! !

Those images can be tricky. I don't know that much about them, but sometimes they don't work.

It's weird. If I click on the quote icon on that post, and then return, and can see the smiley. I'm going to leave the link out for everyone, but maybe you can try it again.

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Hills/3034/anismileyf.gif

I see the problem. Here's the instructions basrah left me to leave an image:
>>> CLICK ON ME FOR INSTRUCTIONS <<<

This is a good place to practice this. So, feel free to retry leaving this image on this topic. (that's why I only left the URL).

Glad you joined us.
Bartelby,

I'm not an internet expert.

I can't bring up that URL within this forum (other then clicking on the quotes icon from your post, then returning to the page without leaving a post). I can bring it up if I put the URL in an email to myself, and then click on the URL from my email. Something about the sign-on that this forum doesn't like.

It's a cute smiley, and I'm sure Diva would like it. Wink Wink

I've been busy and just haven't had the time to keep up with you guys lately.

I think we should officially call this thread closed, since (as someone pointed out) the main topic was "dead" quite a few posts ago. Don't want to annoy anyone! Smile

I'm having lots of fun reading everyone, even when I don't have the time to reply!

Catch you all in the forums designated for "chatting." Big Grin
