And no, you cannot vote twice - I tried!

OK - If I am whalloping your butt, you pick which definition you like.
I was actually gonna use the Aussie version which would be ..."Hey - I got 17 votes on my poll, I bet you kick my arse on this one".
But I thought that might be a little crude

We have arses in the UK too!
While I personally I am not into the whole welcome banner thing, many people are. I also believe that this thread was a bit of an undeserved slap at Mrs. M. As such, I am not thrilled with its content.
...thoroughly agree with Chatter!

Hmmm - really Chatter163? I am of the opinion that too many images detract from the content, others have their own opinions. The reason for the Poll was to get some sort of idea as to what the consensus was. I.e. Should the forums members take up bandwidth welcoming new arrivals (sometimes 3 or 4 times!) or should the forum answer the question posed? Let the Poll decide.

BTW - Chatter163/Dave - have you voted yet?

1) Yes, really.
2) You are entitled to believe that. I myelf do not get too involved in the welcome thing, either. However, this is not the way to go about it, because it is disrespectful.
3) My point is that you know darned well who posts banners most frequently--that is no mystery to anyone here, so your poll seems a very direct and rude way to hurt a certain member's feelings. While her chatty way may not be mine, she is an integral member of this forum, and I resent the way you have trampled over her sensiblities with this thoughtless thread. The fact that she is older than you makes this even more reprehensible.
4) It is a form of bullying to suggest that other members should vote on how someone writes a post. That is her decision--not yours, not mine, and not even for a majority of members to decide. What kind of nonsense is that? Are you paying for the bandwidth on this forum--why are you so worried about that? If you were to tell me how I should write my posts, I would not care if your frivolous poll got 100% response against me, I would tell you to go fly a kite and go right on writing in my own way.
5) Frankly, it is none of your business if I voted or not.
I, for one, hope that you will offer Mrs. M a public apology for your shameful mistreatment of her.

Depends on where in the forum you are talking about. I addressed this in another poll, so I'll not repeat myself, but for those having trouble finding it... >CLICK<
I'll let a secret out about myself... If you want to discourage me from posting/reading a topic, just post a picture that's to wide and runs off the screen.

Same here--I tend not to even look at those. What I do NOT, do, however, is to post polls that purport to tell others what they can and cannot post.
Agree.
There was me thinking that I'd tried to be balanced, asking people's opinions in the open (rather than having secret off-line chats about people as has happened in the past...). I make no secret that I'm not keen on the "Welcome to Forum", "yes, Welcome to the Forum" etc etc messages but to imply that it is some dig at one particular person is wrong.
Now, lets analyse Chatter163's response:-
1) Yes, really. - not sure about the numbering - I guess you write lots of lists.
2) You are entitled to believe that. I myelf do not get too involved in the welcome thing, either. However, this is not the way to go about it, because it is disrespectful. - I'm not seeing any disrespect in the Poll - I only asked a question and posted a poll. Two of the topics were positive, 1 neutral and 1 negative. Not one mentioned anyone's name nor was it implied...
- sorry - nothing I said could be construed as rude or ageist.
- well exactly - it was just a test of people's opinions and not a directive from on high. It certainly cannot be construed as 'bullying'. I repeat - I am just seeking people's opinions.
5) Frankly, it is none of your business if I voted or not. - very true. It was just a retorical question to which you seem to have over-reacted.
I'm pleased that this poll has got people 'talking' - it's a shame that certain people seem to think that it's a personal dig at one particular person when really it was an attempt to gauge other's reactions to the way the forum has 'leant' in the last few months...
Still - we can write what we want so you've said your piece - lets see where the poll goes...

Hey! It was only one picture!
I haven't finished reading this thread ... but I'm going to chime in anyway ...
What's wrong with being nice? We have a very small welcoming committee who meet and greet all the newbies in a prompt and professional manner. Strange that these are also the same people that answer questions, provide support and rarely (I'm ignoring Puppy's crack about my HUGE picture ) participate in flaming other people.
Some forums allow images, some don't. This one does - and if you are on a slow dialup connection you might be better served by disabling images in your browser when coming here. Keep in mind that the internet was basically an email system between scientists and government agencies before pictures were added to the WWW. We wouldn't even be having this discussion without that addition.
Mrs. M, puppy, lexie, etc.... keep up the good work!
R2 - Debate often leads to reform, either of others positions or our own. Your poll is just as valid as any other post and I'm glad you're part of our little group Just make sure you're wearing a floatation device when you rock the boat!
Mother Mary Says, 'HONESTLY! you're just ruint!'
The claim that the poll question was not directed at any one person is laughable. We all know who posts the overwhelming majority of welcome banners, so about whom was the poll concerned, then, if not Mrs. M? Please tell use whom else you meant.
If I stated that we should have a poll question asking whether or not members should waste bandwidth or burden our eyesight by posting a large black apostrophe (or comma, whichever it is) with a yellow background, whom would our members reasonaly conclude I meant, if not you? If you said that we should have a poll asking if members should have forum ID's that end in the number 163, whom would would our members reasonably conclude you meant, if not me? Therefore, your attempt to claim that the poll question was not directed at any particular member is completely implausible, since virtually all of the welcome banners are posted by a single member.
You last post ignored my observations concerning the poll. It is not your place to try and use the poll results to try and pressure a member to change her style of posting. And please do not try to say that you were not atempting this; your earlier post clearly said to "let the poll decide" if these were appropriate. Equally ludicrous is the pretense that an additional purpose is to get bring the discussion out into the open and avoid "secret offline chats." Such altruistic motives--gag! Tell you what, instead of trying to police private conversations that people allegedly have (and can say whatever they wish there--good, bad or indifferent), why don't you knock off this immature nonsense and quit pretending you were not speaking of anyone in particular?
I will be awaiting your identification of the other parties to whom the poll made reference.

The Forum is a reflection of the pulse of its members on any given day - War - Weather - Wisdom all play a part - but the Welcome You Get is crucial and the timing and responsiveness is - clearly shown in the previous posts cited.
Only reason I don't send up welcome rockets in color - I don't know how...YET
I am eternaly greatful for the warm welcome I received-can't speak or judge for others.
Any Change in the chemistry of present welcome
would be very destructive - the damage the poll has already done will have to be assesed a week from now. Bsndwidth - - surely your joking you can buy that - but not--what
members contribute of themselves.
All the answers to any questions are in the FAQ.s
The softer, personal, multiple replies from different directions give the AS Forum its unique quality - International patina and interest. In addition to just answers all is supported and built upon the AS rock called - "Welcome"

I love the welcome banners. They certainly made me feel welcome here. It's a whole lot more fun than reading a book or instructions. It's the people here that make this board fun. They give it a healthy wholesome attitude and I would not change a single thing.

Now I remember that picture!!
Bigger may be better, but certainly not always. Guess I should have quoted the 'more-and-more' I was speaking toward. Yes, I still think it possible to get carried away, but that's what happens on an open public forum. When I can't stand it any more, I'll not complain, I'll just go away. (don't see that happening anytime soon)
p.s. Your 'picture worth a thousand words' was worth 6 or 7 thousand!
... but not worth posting at all, if reduced and only half an inch high.

As >I< am a Welcome Poster, I didnt see that poll as directed at anyone in particular UNTIL Chatter decided to make a big deal out of it.
Mrs M isnt the only pix/Welcome poster, we now have an abundance of them in the ranks.
I believe if Chatter hadnt piped up with his "how disrespectful" post, the poll would of gone along nicely and shown what the consensus was.
The content of that post could be taken many ways. Maybe there is a little sarcasm there. Maybe its all tongue-in-cheek.

I totally agree with Morey. I like this forum not only because of the expert advice one receives but because of it's WELCOMING, warm, friendly and non intimidating enviroment. Such an enviroment needs to be expanded not decreased.
Anyone want to guess how I voted?

When reading the poll it seems that the first two choices really are the same!
"I will be awaiting your identification of the other parties to whom the poll made reference." - please hold your breath.
Interesting that only one person has taken this the wrong way - even Mrs M has replied in a witty manner so I guess she wasn't 'dissed' after all. The results say it all - I guess the welcome banners can stay after all!
R2 [watch out Chatter - here comes the apostrophe... (or is it a comma?)]

Hardly. She has already thanked me for my support and let me know what she thinks. She simply has too much elegance to respond accordingly here.
Bless, are you having off-line chats about the terrible R2 who dared to 'rock the boat'? It really is quite a pathetic over-reaction. I guess you have nothing better to do. No doubt you'll climb back on your soap-box and spout forth some more rudeness (let's face it - you are quite a rude person Chatter163) but if it stops you punching a wall then type away!
Still, here's hoping you're still holding your breath!

I find it amusing that Chatter doesnt want R2 to tell Mrs M how to post, yet Chatter feels the need to tell R2 how to post.
