What's going on? I've had this item in a bidgroup for quite along time now and finally, my high bid should have been placed on this auction that just closed (4579251387). This also happened last month, but since it was near midnight/1 am I thought it might not have placed due to maintenance etc. A bit choked... please advise.

I placed a snipe on eBay Item #7354497238 which closed last evening---usually, if my snipe bid is outbided, I receive an email (or multiple emails, depending upon the course of the bidding) that my bid has been outbidded, even if my snipe is 5 minutes prior to end of auction. This is the 2nd time within several days that I have lost auctions because AS never emailed me concerning bid amounts over my sniped bids. AND I WANT TO KNOW WHY!!!
It was well below the closing *winning bid, but well above the current bid at the time--this is now unique. On former occasions, AS has emailed me thatmy snipe amount had been outbid and, if necessary, emails me multiple times as I increase my maximum snipe bids. I have lost 2 auctions within the last few days because I was not informed of outbidding.
Bid history for auction#7354497238 follows:

m.clayton.......$69.50...Oct-06-05 19:30:26 PDT
reform-modern...$68.50...Oct-06-05 19:30:34 PDT
johnt9142.......$49.99...Oct-06-05 19:30:31 PDT
johnt9142.......$24.00...Sep-29-05 21:36:17 PDT

OK, don't need to know what you bid as I asked in last post.
7 DAYS before end of auction, John bids opening bid of $24. John is displayed as the winning bidder at $24.
13 seconds(!) before end of auction, m.clayton bids AT LEAST $69.50. m.clayton is displayed as the winning bidder at $24.50
8 seconds before the end of the auction, John places another bid of $49.99. m.clayton is displayed as the winning bidder at $50.99.
5 seconds before the end of the auction, reform places a bid of $68.50. m.clayton is displayed as the winning bidder at $69.50.
Auction ends.

Exactly WHEN do you think AuctionSniper should have send you the e-mail? -- at 13 seconds, 8 seconds, or 5 seconds before the end of the auction??
My bid was placed well in advance of outbid--I placed a snipe of $47.58 the day before the auction ended! The snipe is set for 5 MINUTES prior to the end of the auction. I, in the past, have gone in manually when AS failed to snipe on my behalf and have WON auctions by manually sniping at the last minute -- in each instant, no bid on my behalf was registered in my User ID on the auction by AS! Do you even see
jebarts" on the list of bids--although I placed a higher bid the day before? My complaint is that AS never emailed me to advise (if this, indeed, was the case, that my bid was lower than a current bid on the auction. Is AS not taking snipes as they're entered on this website (I do not use the upgrade via eBay)---my snipe bid is registered here as having been placed on 10/6 when it was placed by me on 10/5. This is not the only instance of failure on AS' part.
Perhaps I am confused---not sure if "5" lead time means 5 minutes or 5 seconds prior to end of an auction. However, I always place a snipe well in advance and usually, in the past, with the last couple of exceptions, received emails from AS advising if my snipe has been superceded by a higher bid placed subsequent to the placement of my snipe with AS. Is it 5 minutes or 5 seconds. It would be nice to have a clear definition from AS.

Hard to believe considering your apparent incomprehension of how this whole AuctionSniper/Ebay/proxy bidding interaction thing works.

When you enter a bid (generally recommended to be your MAXIMUM bid which means you wouldn't be willing to bid more EVEN IF someone else is willing to bid more) into AuctionSniper(AS), it DOES NOT place a bid for you on that auction at that time (if that's what you want, why bother to use AS at all, just sign on to ebay and place your bid yourself). When you enter a bid in AS, what you have done is to SCHEDULE a bid to be placed by AS in your behalf at a specified time (generally 25 seconds or less) before the end of the auction. AS & Ebay are totally separate entities. Ebay has no clue that AS plans to place that bid for you in the last remaining seconds of the auction. Likewise, AS is not privy to any proxy bids that ebay is holding. All AS knows about the auction's bids is the same that you know when you look at the auction yourself -- what the CURRENT winning bid is. If your scheduled snipe is outbid with some time remaining before the end of the auction, AS sends out an outbid e-mail notice. An AS representative would need to check in to let us know at what minimum time remaining in the auction does AS bother sending out that e-mail. Logic would dictate that it would be a waste of time & resources to send out that outbid notice with only seconds remaining in the auction -- there would be no time to even READ such info regarding the auction, much less to act on it before the auction ends!

Referring to my last post with the bid history, up until 8 seconds before the end of your auction, your snipe of $47.58 was a valid & viable bid since the winning bid was $24.50 or less up to that time. At the 8 second mark before the auction end, a bid was placed that bumped up the winning bid to $50.99 held by the eventual winner. If your snipe was scheduled to fire at 5 seconds, AS would not be able to place the bid since at that moment your $47.58 snipe bid was too low to be a valid bid. You simply were outbid before you had a chance to place a bid.

Not quite sure what your complaint is in this issue. If it is you didn't have a chance to increase your snipe bid to your TRUE MAX bid -- why didn't you enter your TRUE MAX bid when you initially scheduled the snipe? If your complaint is that you lost an auction because there was somebody out there that had deeper pockets/was willing to pay more than you for an item you wanted -- well, we've ALL been THERE! Wink
Jabbergah--thought I thanked you for your explanation--if that wasn't clear, I apologize. However, don't appreciate comments such as "never heard of---difficult to comprehend such inability---". Reminds one of a very closed community--here in the US, one thinks of part of the state of Colorado; however, it's all too widespread everywhere. Not particularly yourself, but some of you here have restored the term "snipe" to its original meaning--perhaps to preserve your little park from intruders (?) Not incidentally, I support gun control! Thanks for your help.
Addendum to previous remarks to Jabbergah: I may have been using this site for years, but bid very selectively and snipe even more selectively. As I mentioned in posting elsewhere, I first posted (and actually looked at the community board for the first time because my snipe on the first auction which ended 10/4 did not register and, apparently, I was not the only one to experience this. But thanks again.
Am I the only one here who has no idea what the F jebarts is on about? S/he appears to have swallowed a dictionary and seems intent on sprinkling over-long words throughout their postings.

Seems s/he has no idea about how AS works - setting snipes at 5 minutes lead time (?), bidding and snipping, relying on AS to email them before upping their snipe. And what's with the shouting - "AND I WANT TO KNOW WHY!!!"???

I suggest that s/he goes back to basics, reads the FAQs and starts over again, remembering that AS works best when you bid your max and walk away. Nibbling is not a good thing.
