Ohhhh Electrical Storms!!

If you value your computer pull the plug out during electrical storms!

Last time we had one it destroyed two handsfree base units and a nightlight.

I have a real good surge protector on everything electronic around here. I learned that from when I used to generate my own electricity. It tended to have spikes or dips.

Shop,I do too. In the States, GG, you can also buy a protector from the electric company that they stand behind! I am sorry to hear of your loss. That is never good news.

Wow Mrs.M, you must not have commonwealth edison there. Or Con-ed as we call it. My niece lost her computer, fridge, phones, microwave and I forget what else because the transformer outside her house spiked. It was "supposed" to have a surge protector but it didn't work. Con-ed said "sorry, we don't cover that". Crazy!!

Apart from the lightning damage I've never had a problem with spikes.

I have, however, no faith in surge protectors against lightning so I prefer to physically unplug sensitive equipment.

The automatic nightlight I mentioned was found to have every copper track on its circuit board burnt away after a VERY close strike, possibly in the back yard (hell of a bang!). I wonder if a surge-protector could have stopped it, or simply been destroyed as well.

That kind of power and unpredictability, while uncommon here, is enough for me to disconnect anything sensitive at the first rumble.

We've had a few electrical storms this week, too.

Shortly after buying this computer I had a surge protector burn out as a result of a spike. Fortunately the computer wasn't harmed. I've heard that most surge protectors don't work with the really big spikes so I always unplug things during electrical storms, too.

During one storm a year or two ago I was very careful to unplug the computer but forgot about the TV, DVD, and VCR. A surge fried the VCR's innards.

I cannot believe thre is another hurricane on the horizon..and 160 mph winds this morning!! Yikes! Anyone want to buy the rest of my Fl.property????? (kidding)...I think!

I was thinking there might be quite the buyer's market in FL properties, especially if this 3RD hurricane hits! Guess you're glad you evacuated to the Carolinas before all these storms hit, huh? Mrs.M, I'll give you $100 for your FL property -- is it under water???

Lol, Jabber, not yet! It has missed the last two storms, but I don't know about this one yet. At least I sold my residence before all of this.

Im in south florida i bet u wouldnt like storms anymore power was last week for 7 days i was lucky im on hospital grid got priorty. theres not power line standng and worsty storm is coming add that too online busness equals no busness to out of business until the moron that i am realized to gout and spen 500.00 and buy a generator to keep computers and internet up

Its not the hurrcanes really its 80 year old power line sytem where the most importanting thing is hiding the lines in 15-20 foot trees that have thathave 12 inch roots there all fslling down from being wet so everyline almost is or has been on the ground. they pt 75 foot concrete polls last year stoped after 4 people said they were ugly. no power no business no economy that 100 offer was high, its worth the swamp its sits on

Goodness, where do you live in Fl. that they stopped using concrete poles? I lived in Naples and they installed special poles and crossing lights all over the city. It does look like south Fl. will be spared this hurricane...I hope!

hjeres the hints. T people who live here didnt like ugly concret poles. clue 2 they walk around with their noses pointed up at poles and they think the sh.t doesnt stink between ft la an wet palm
