Apart from the lightning damage I've never had a problem with spikes.

I have, however, no faith in surge protectors against lightning so I prefer to physically unplug sensitive equipment.

The automatic nightlight I mentioned was found to have every copper track on its circuit board burnt away after a VERY close strike, possibly in the back yard (hell of a bang!). I wonder if a surge-protector could have stopped it, or simply been destroyed as well.

That kind of power and unpredictability, while uncommon here, is enough for me to disconnect anything sensitive at the first rumble.
