It starts to get warmer in May, but can't count on it till June. Usually open the pool the end of may or so. We need to get a heater for it so we can use it more than three months! Summers are nice, but when you look at the whole picture the winters are toooooooo long. Frown

A message for MG:
quote:
We too will remember your son in our prayers. I will print his pic (if it is ok) and take it to church and ask the pastor and congregation to say a special prayer for him. And all the other men and women as well.

I took Derek's pic and gave it to the prayer group at the church, they meet every M-W-F. They will distribute it to the other church branches as well as the the radio station at their school. It is so encourging to see youug people like Derek willing to fight to protect us and our freedoms.

Jake....Thank you so much. That is so nice. I will share it with Derek the next time I get to talk to him. It really touches him that people he's never met wish him well. And all the troops need to hear the support. It hurts them alot when they hear of the protests. Believe me, no one wants the war to end more than the soldiers. (And their moms) Here is a picture from last Saturday of the horrible sand storms they have. This is where Derek lives/works now. The color looks neat in a photo, but imagine breathing in that dust! Red Face

PS Jake is my dad's name! And Derek told me he would use it if he has a son some day!! Cool Big Grin

Oh, heh, good morning to all. Smile

Getting our taxes done this afternoon Eek
We sold the building where I had my business, so the capital gains taxes will be awful. Frown One of the main reasons I quit my retail business was the taxes. There was a tax for everything and I really got peeved when I had to send more for taxes than my older son made in the Air Force all year. I thought of just putting in a note saying "Since this is more than you pay my son to protect us, I'll just give it to him and save you the trouble!" Or, write the check for 1 cent less and put in a penny! They have to do ALOT of paper work for that. heheheheheeehhheh
I may be a grump tonight! Cross my fingers it's not so bad. Last year sucked! I HATE tax time..... Eek s c a r e y

Good afternoon all!

It's -2 degree C here, and the sky is a bright blue with not a hint of cloud. Wonderful!

Mory has inspired me to get back on my diet, so I had muesli for breakfast, pitta bread with chicken salad for lunch, banana and apple for elevenses and I'll have trout with steamed veg for tea.

Goodbye rice pudding and cream! Frown

I'm sure it's a case of "what you can't have, you immediately want!"

Hot puddings are really tempting when the temperature drops down to -8 or so....we don't have any heating in the house beyond a log fire in the lounge, so it's fairly cold at nights just now and a lovely bowl of rice pudding is just wonderful!

My main problem with this diet thing is that I'm struggling against nature. I'm only 4'11", but that's because I was born with abnormally short legs from the knee down. From the knees up I'm built like a person who should be 5'10". Because my muscles are weak and my joints aren't very good (they've been rebuilt in a lot of places: clever surgeons!) I was told that I shouldn't ever go over 7 stones (that's 98 pounds).

That's low even for a person who is normally 4'11", but for a person who is 5'10" it's positively emaciated! I'm 9st 7lbs (133lbs) at the moment and I'm getting trouble with my back, hips, knees and ankles, so I've got to try and get down to at least 8st, if I can.

The medical advice on this is rather confusing - on the one hand there was the "don't go over 7" thing, but another orthopaedic surgeon said that was ridiculous, and that I should just "accept that you have a severe disability, and use sticks or a wheelchair".

Personally I'll try and walk a middle route - with WALK as the operative word!! Wink I must remind myself of that whenever I feel hungry.

Ain't that the truth Mrs. M. Although when I got my gas & electric bills I pondered how great central H & A really is (after I turned everything off that is). We sure are spoiled. We have everything and still want more and (I think)don't truly appreciate what we do have. What happened to the time when love, family and friends were the greatest treasures you could have.

I cannot imagine living without central heat or A/c today. I remember when I was working and traveling, living in many place without these conveniences. Never got totally used to the discomforts! How spoiled we Americans are!

My house was built in 1958 and has none of those creature comforts; just a windowshaker in my bedroom. I really do not miss them too much; esprcially when the people I know that have them are always complaining about their electric bills. Then I tell them that mine was up to $22.00 last month. MG... That pic looks like someone used an orange filter. It is spectacular. I just looked outside and it is sprinkling very lightly with a slight breeze and 52 degrees. (I suppose it is goog weather compared to many places) Like Mrs. M said "How spoiled we Americans are!" (at least me). I know what you mean about the protesters. When my friend returned from Viet Nam protesters spit on him and called him every foul name in the book as he got off the plane in San Francisco. I just don't understand some people. Confused Good, bad, right or wrong Derek is an innocent participant and every true American should get on their knees and pray and thank him and his comrads. Unfortunately to many are apathetic.

Does Derek have an email address. If so I would like to send him a note of my appreciation.
I will get off my soap now.

...a couple of weeks ago, I did not own a tv; so there is a great savings. Plus, I only turn on the water heater just before I use it (usually in the morning); that will save about $10.00 a month. That was a trick that my mother used and I guess that I just caught the habit.

Yikes, No TV. How did you manage. (actually, you will probably find you managed better without it). No TV would make difference. I have 4 TV's incl the one in my computer.

A lady I know in Mt. Shasta Ca. was selected to participate in the Neilson ratings survey. Because she was the only one selected in that small county a Neilson representive personally drove from San Francisco (about 300 miles) to personally deliver the ballot. When she arrived with ballot, candy, folwers etc. the lady had to tell her she didn't own a TV.

My shower is 75 feet from my water heater and the feed goes thru my unheated crawl space. it really took a long time to run the water. So I had them install a heating recirculator on a timer that starts 15 minutes before I arise and stops 30 minutes later. I also put a timer on the water heater that starts and stops it the same way. Saves bundles and I am always comfortable.
I have been trying to find this poem written by the Chaplain in Derek's battalion since yesterday. I should have put it up with the sandstorm picture. The Chaplain posted it with regards to Dr Seus.....

I do not like this dust and sand
I do not like it on my hands
I do not like dust in my head
I do not like it in my bed
I do not like sand in my hair
I hate it in my underwear
<oRazz></oRazz>

I do not like this dust and sand
I used to like the color tan
I do not like dust on my clothes
I despise it up my nose
I do not like sand on my face
Invading all my private space
I do not like dust in my mouth
I do not like north or south
I do not like sand east or west
Nowhere is where I like it best
I do not like dust in my ear
It's hard to reach, I cannot hear

When it gets in my drink and food
It affects my attitude
I like it not with ham and eggs
I do not like sand on my legs
I like it not in socks and boots
Nor on my veggies, meats and fruits

This dust and sand floats everywhere
It dances in the desert air
I like a dust storm even less
Because it leaves a gritty mess
I want to leave this sand and dust
But until then in God I trust
