I missed out on an item earlier this week which I really wanted because I believed it was sniped by another bidder.

A similar item has come up again and I think this will be the last chance to get it. I've signed up for AS but want to be sure I beat any other snipes on this item.

What I am wondering is if I can set 2 snipes on the one item? The reason for 2 is that I want to set one of the snipes to go off at about 2 or 3 seconds but dont want to risk it not getting there in time - so I would also have a snipe set to go off at 5 sec?

This way if the snipe at 2 or 3 sec doesnt make it in time I still have one in at 5 sec that should have made it? Is this possible or have I got it completely wrong? I dont mind if I have to pay for 2 snipes - the item is an expensive item.

..ok after thinking about this I think I have it wrong!

If I snipe with a max bid way above the current bid - is that effectively like placing a proxy bid on ebay?

E.G. Lets say an item is currently at $600 and the current high bidder has a proxy bid set with a max bid of $800.

If I snipe at 5sec to go and my max AS bid is set to $850 - will it simply keep bumping up the bid until its at $810 and then I win? Or will it just bump up the bid to the next increment from the current bid ($610) and then the other bidder will win at $620 because he has an ebay proxy bid with a max bid higher than that?
Yes, you would win for $810.

However the cool thing is you'd also win for $800.01 if that was your maximum. Basically the last person to make a big bid gets to win for less than an increment. So in that reguards it's always good to snipe, and to put in your maximum.

On small priced items that rarely happens. But I bet on bigger items it happens a lot where you win for less than a bid increment.

Good luck!
Remember that AS submits one bid on your behalf, and one only. It's eBay that establishes a proxy reserve and "bumps up" the high bid as other bids are made. That's why, as Sara says, it's best to bid your max. There won't be many other bids made after yours, if any, since your snipe comes in at the very end of the auction. It's an interesting point Sara raises about winning by less than one increment, and I think she's right on the money with that one. Big Grin
I've just joined this sniping thing and to my surprise AS put in 2 bids for me for the same amount - and I still won but I don't understand why AS bid twice. Could it be because I changed the lead time from my first choice - so I modified it.

Odd. Doesn't make sense to me. I've still got my third free snipe, but eBay definitely shows 2 bids from me.
Mike,

I don't see how AS could do this. ebay doesn't let anyone enter the same bid amount on the same auction. Even if they are high bidder and over the next increment, they have to bid at least $.01 more.

You must be seeing this on ebay's bid history? Are the bid times the same?

It seems like AS support said that snipes were placed from multiple servers to insure that at least one got in. Maybe both hit ebay at the same nano-second and ebay didn't have time to stop the extra one? This is just a guess. My guessing hasn't been very good today, so you may have to wait for info from AS support.

What ever the reason, it's something new.

And I'm pretty sure AS doesn't let you place multiple snipes (I THINK).
