Hello I am new to As, my question is when there is an opening bid of $499, and there is no RESERVE, why wouldn't I just bid let's say 5000, if I understand ebay's rules wouldn't I only pay the amount at the closing of the auction, another Words if the auction closed that $750 and I bid the 5000 wouldn't I win the auction at $750, so wouldn't it make sense to bit Super High. Thank you R.I. 5000.

Welcome to AS.

They say it takes two to tango - and in this case, if somebody else came along and bid $4,800 you would certainly win! Paying $4900 for a $750 object would be pretty foolish don't you think?

If you want to win, certainly bid the highest amount you can afford. However if the market price
is $800, then bid that at the most.

There is an old saying that an auction is a place "where greed and stupidity meet"

Never, ever, get carried away. Like a bus, another object of desire is bound to turn up - sooner or later!

to the Forum.

Sure. That's the idea, always bid the maximum you are willing to pay. Just remember, be prepared to pay the 5 grand or whatever your bid, someone could come along and bid the item up to or near your max bid (it happened to me once) Frown. Also, bid an odd amount like $5,007.75. Some other people will probably show up and give you more specific advice (and chew me out if I'm wrong). Good luck!

Hi, and to the forum.

Yes, and if you would still be happy to pay as much as $5000 you would be correct in placing a $5000 snipe. You should always bid very late in the auction, and bid the maximum amount you would be happy paying.

Be careful to not get caught up in the 'Win at all cost' game. If that gizmo is only worth $2000 to you, bidding 5000 could be a huge mistake. It may be worth 4000 to someone else, and you would be stuck owing the seller $4100. Wink

That's the hard part, deciding the max amount it's worth to YOU.

I went Nuclear on an item I really really wanted and I was sure it would sky rocket in the last few hours. I was mighty chuffed to win that item for $100 and my Nuclear snipe was over $300.

I was really tempted to proxy bid, but I think in this instance it would of surely created a bid war, so I just set my nuke and let it go.

Proxy Bidding, perhaps this will help you understand.

eBay uses a helpful bidding system (called proxy bidding) to make bidding on auctions more convenient and less time-consuming for buyers.

Here's how it works:
When you place a bid, you enter the maximum amount you'd be willing to pay for the item. Your maximum amount is kept confidential from other bidders and the seller.
The eBay system compares your bid to those of the other bidders.
The system places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position (or to meet the reserve price). The system will bid up to your maximum amount.
If another bidder has a higher maximum, you'll be outbid. BUT, if no other bidder has a higher maximum, you win the item. And you could pay significantly less than your maximum price!

This means you don't have to keep coming back to re-bid every time another bid is placed.

Note: This bidding system does not apply to Multiple Item Auctions (Dutch Auctions).

Note: In Reserve Price Auctions, if your maximum bid is the first to be greater than the seller's reserve price, the eBay system will automatically jump the price up to meet the reserve, and bidding will continue from there.

Thank you Mrs.M are Proxy Bids only used if you bid directly on ebay? Do Proxy bids mean anything at all when bidding with AS because I thought bidding on sniper is done electronically within the last few seconds so if I get this right Proxy bidding doesn't mean anything on sniper. So the best thing to do is just bid the maximum I can afford or I am willing to pay for. Thank you for any information given.
