I signed up to have the following auction sniped 3 seconds before the end:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7608169886

For some reaon, the bid was placed 22 seconds before the end. Since the winner placed bids both 12 seconds before me and 18 seconds after me, I assume he was placing his own bids in real time. This means that I would have won the auction if he hadn't had enough time to react. Why was my snipe placed too early?

Also, my bid was $78.65. His winning bid was 79.98. Does this make sense?

Hmm - dilema! Do I say RTFM to this person and point him at the FAQs or do I mention that, as it ended at Apr-15-06 19:00:00 PDT, then AS will add a few seconds to the lead time to try to ensure the snipe gets placed.
Next, should I mention that no-one can react in 18 seconds and point them at the ebay Help's section on proxy bidding?
And finally, do I mention that it's not the last bid that wins but the highest?

Results on a postcard please.

It sure does look like that to me. We’ve had some people that have said that 18 seconds is more then enough time to react to someone else’s snipe. Here’s one of them:

I’ve been staring at that for some time now. The winning bid should have been $79.65. I keep thinking I’m missing the “big picture”, but it’s got me stumped.

It’s not the last snipe that causes a react but the first one.
Hmmm
User ID Bid Amount Date of bid
 mrear ( 392) US $79.98 Apr-15-06 18:59:56 PDT
 trifink ( 114) US $78.65 Apr-15-06 18:59:38 PDT
 mrear ( 392) US $51.00 Apr-15-06 18:59:26 PDT
 trifink ( 114) US $30.00 Apr-12-06 16:03:19 PDT

trifink's bid of $30 is bid up to the next increment ($31?) by mrear's proxy bid of $51. Trfink's next bid of $78.65 takes it up to the next increment ($52?) and mrear comes in with his bid (snipe?) of $79.98 which, under ebay's increment system, should have shown as $79.65

Similar problem here. My request was for a 5 sec snipe, but AS placed it nearly a minute prior to closing.

Ended: May-07-06 19:00:00 PDT

User ID Bid Amount Date of bid

egwiener ( 276) US $85.75 May-07-06 18:58:59 PDT
j-bob ( 142) US $84.75 May-07-06 18:59:34 PDT
j-bob ( 142) US $65.27 May-06-06 06:30:58 PDT

As I see it, AS cost me $20 this time.

Any suggestions (recourse).

I'm one of em. 18 seconds is more, much more, than enuf time to react. It's only not enuf time if for some reason you're limited to a single window. Assuming that 18 secs is not enuf space to react is just wrong. With multiple windows, a backup bid amount entered in advance and all set to "Confirm", and minimum concentration, even 7 or 8 seconds should be quite enuf, let alone 18. When I've bothered, I've been able to react easily to bids placed something like 10 to 12 seconds before close.

I will bet that the seller had a reserve price of $79.98. As I know you know, this is why it wouldn't show as $79.65. Trifink, you can settle this, was the item subject to a reserve?

Crikey - does that finish on the hour on a Sunday? Is that a busy (the busiest) time on eBay? Have you read the FAQs and tips on AS's help pages?

My guess YES : YES : NO !

AS's dilema - get the snipe in and keep the punter happy VERSUS the demands for 'recourse' if the snipe is too late.

ps.hmm - hadn't considered the auction having a reserve! Eek
This was a no reserve auction. The final sales price is still a mystery to me. I maintain that the winning bidder was placing his bids in real time and that 18 seconds is plenty of time to submit a bid. (I suspect that region2 is a little slow.) I think I would have won the auction if my bid had been placed three seconds before the end.

It’s a good chance you’ll have a long wait for a response on this forum. Try filing a support request to expedite the learning: http://support.auctionsniper.com/

I suspect you’ll get a canned response from support, but it doesn’t hurt to try.
