There are times when smileys aren't enough. So wish this forum supported sound.
I think the sound would drive you crazy after a while. Have you ever listened to it on AOL?(but, then, I prefer to keep my sound off most of the time)
A piece of trivia - that word that everyone uses but claims that they don't is an acronym from old English law (unless I'm getting my urban legends mixed up).
And the meaning was different?
Urban Legend, Yes
True? Probably not.

Google search 'acronym' and your word. First site found:
With precious few exceptions, words of acronymic origin date from the 20th century and no earlier. It's almost guaranteed, therefore, any word from before the time of automobiles did not spring to life from a series of initials becoming so common folks began pronouncing it as its own word.
Just look how much a person can learn before noon! ( I really meant that..when I went back to read my post, it sounded sort of smart-mouthed! Didn't mean it that way!!)

Well, well. Some interest. Hmmm?
I am always interested in language.
The acronym gets 6,440 hits in Google. But, since it gets so many hits, that must mean it's wrong (I mean that - "prevailing wisdom" is an oxymoron). But, I do show references as early as 1500's.
Oh the joys of a forum and internet. Imagine the days when people had to look this kind of stuff up in library, or worst, remember it.

I have spent many, many hours in libraries.
Rick, could you, for slow me, tell me the first 2 letters of the word? The word I thought you meant brought up 0 results on google!
"Experience is one thing you can't get for nothing." - Oscar Wilde
"Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes." - Oscar Wilde
I'll agree with both!!
The OW quotes Rick listed above reminded me of this story:
A reporter was interviewing a successful businessman, and asked him to what he attributed his success?
"Two words," the businessman said. "GOOD JUDGEMENT!"
"How do you get good judgement?", the reporter asked.
"One word -- EXPERIENCE!"
"But how do you get experience?", the reporter persisted.
"Two words -- BAD JUDGEMENT!"
Don't know if true, but always seemed to have the ring of truth!

Jabber,

So many posts - so little time. An Oscar Wilde here - a picture there - a LOL somewhere.
No 2 days alike.

Hi Jabber,
Just an observation. Wasn't sure if anyone noticed it. Just found it curious.
P.S. I'm glad you started this topic. Before you did, people seemed a little bit uptight about private topics.
Lol, and what are we talking about?...I think I didn't make the last turn!!

Is my topic about Nothing, bigger than my topic about Something?
It would be funny if the nothing topic was more interesting than my something topic. Sometimes I want to write about something but have nowhere to put it, now I wouldnt know whether to put in under Something or Nothing.
HELP!! I am sounding like Rick

That's all that was changed/added.
It was a slow day for me. No much caught my fancy today, at least on the forum.
And what caught your fancy elsewhere?
Lexie
Lexie
C. S. Lewis, but I have been very faithful on my forum fancies.
I am currently having an email arguement with a seller who seems to think he knows more about the australian postal system than I do. I dont think so Chum!!
Its a good outlet for some pent up agression though and it does save me from *kicking the cat* (ohh - I realised that may be an aussie-ism - kicking the cat is a saying...I DONT actually kick my cats )
Ack - I think I may put a disclaimer in my signature

I did a google on C.S Lewis and got "Results 1 - 10 of about 1,760,000"

Wonder why people say, "There's more then one way to skin a cat." Hell, one way is one too many.
