...reason I asked was because I just listed an item I'm HOPING will go for $500+, and was wondering if accepting escrow may be attractive to bidders. But if Mrs.M has sold bunches of big ticket items WITHOUT escrow, I don't see why I should bother! Wink

Sounds like a scam, Mrs.M! Eek I hadn't even thought of that. I think I'll avoid escrow if I can. I'll just have to convince any potential buyers what a wonderful & trustworthy person I am! Wink Will any of you guys be references for me? Maybe I can get dam_mad? Roll Eyes Wadya think? Wink

Mrs.M. I gave it alot of thought. There are similar items on ebay, but not a lot. Some bidding activity, but not gobs. The item is an older musical instrument that MAY have collector value OR could be used.

I like ending my auctions on a Sunday. In past auctions, I've noticed that often the most (sometimes ONLY) bidding activity happens on Saturday & Sunday. It dawned on me if I posted on a Thursday night with a 10-day listing, it would have exposure to TWO Sats. & Suns. Seemed like a decent strategy and worth the extra fee.

I didn't do something stupid, did I? Confused

I think thats a great strategy Jab Smile especially for an item like that. For me it wouldnt work as I list in amongst the catergories that have 1000's of listings everyday...I find that I only get in the action when my items are on the last day or from my regulars.

Hope it goes well Big Grin

Jabber, probably not in that case. I find in most instances that people look and bid at the first and during the last 24 hours. Sometimes if someone looks at the first and decides to watch it, when it is such a long period, they tend to forget about the item. I use a one day auction for little things and actually use a three for things that are in the thousands. I am far from an expert in old musical instruments and I can see your reasoning, certainly! It makes sense to me! Wink

....what do I HAVE?!? (Ever have one of those moments?) The bidding has zipped past my $525 reserve with over 9 days to go in the listing! Eek No snipers here, that's for sure! Got about half dozen e-mail queries about end auction early, what money am I looking for, etc. Told all I plan to let listing run at least thru weekend before making any early-end decisions. Got one e-mail that suggests item may actually be a model 11 years OLDER than I thought. Wow! That's nice! >I'M< almost tempted to bid on the thing! Wink

10 days is a loooooooooooooooong time, but I looooooooooove the anticipation - unless a cute little 3 or 5 dayer (must accepts Paypal - "Is that legal?") comes along (maybe it's a guy thingy).
It happens, jabber, and when it does,it is exciting! I sold something once that I expected to go for $2000. It flew up to $6000.! I was ONE happy camper! Smile Also, I agree...end it early for what reason??

Are your bidders established? If not, you might want to get their ID rundown while the auction is running. Once it has ended, you only have access to the winner...its nice to have the backup's info on hand just in case. Wink

HELP! Haven't done anything like this before -- please explain? Confused

Jabbergah
Only whie your auction is still running...go to your My page...click search at the top of the page..then click member search...then contact info, fill it out..you will need their bidding ID and the auction #. The results will be emailed to you, includes a phone # and email, among other things. After the auction, only the winner is available!

Mrs.M, thanks for the instructions how to get ID info. I'll wait until closer to auction end and maybe get the top 5 bidders info. That way I'll be more comfortable sending out 2-chance offers if top bidder balks.

Now I'm getting worried about shipping this "priceless" thing! Eek LOL! Nice problem to have! Wink

Jabbergah
...an addendum for my description, Shirley.

Here's what I got so far:
quote:
Thanks to everybody for all the interest in this item! I appreciate the e-mailed offers to end the auction early, but unless you can absolutely BLOW ME AWAY with an incredibly generous offer (think 5 figures....BEFORE the decimal! ;-) ), I’m inclined to let the auction go ahead and run its course. That said, for all bidders, be sure to only bid an amount you are willing and able to promptly pay. If you are concerned about snipe bidders, just be sure to bid the maximum bid at which you’ll have no regrets whether you win OR lose! Happy bidding & good luck!

What do you think? (He asks with fear & trepidation only an author experiences with an editor!) Eek Wink

Jabbergah
Jab, based on the number of bids you've gotten in less than 24 hours, you'd be crazy to end early for ANY amount! (grin)

Your note sounds great, but I didn't think you could change a description after you have bids? (says the non-seller...)

Only two things I would change about your note, and both are completely optional. One is to change "I'm inclined" to something a bit firmer, like "I'm going to". The other is to say "if you're concerned about snipe bidders, remember that it's not the LAST bid that wins, it's the HIGHEST. Bid the maximum amount you're ready to pay, and you’ll have no regrets whether you win OR lose."

That way snipers will know they're welcome, and non-snipers might start to get a clue...

As for "fear and trepidation", there's no need. You're a good writer -- my notes aren't corrections, merely the opinions of a peer.

...is appreciated, Shirley & Mrs.M.

Yes, I DO need to make an addendum -- I have another paragraph that corrects a mistake in my description. I planned to include this paragraph with the correction to forestall some of the e-mail questions & traffic.

Shirley, on the "inclined", your opinion is noted, but I DO want to communicate some hedge. Wink Yes, the auction will run its course, but maybe I WILL end early with an offer, but your better come to me with a hugundous-knock-me-dead offer! -- None of this $50-or-$100-higher-than-the-current-winning-bid stuff! That way, I hope if I get any e-mail offers, they'll be seriously BIG! Wink Actually, I was kinda hoping 2 or 3 nuclear snipers Eek would show up! Wink

Regarding the sniper portion of the note, I think I like your wording better. I'll use it or an amalgamation thereof! Wink Is there royalties on it? Eek If so, that's why I'll be amalgamating! Razz LOL! Big Grin

Thanks for the thoughts!

Some questions:

- The member ID thingy you told me about earlier -- is there a charge for that?

- Also, in another post somewhere you mentioned that you like to pick up boats, campers, and motorhomes to sell for a profit. Do you buy offline - sell online? Buy online - sell offline? Buy & sell, online & offline?

With the experience with this guitar, I'm thinking I like the big ticket items better than the trinkets, baubles, & beads I've done up to this point! Wink I like seeing the bids go up 10's, 50's, & 100's at a time instead of $0.50 & $1 at a time! I just need to find a regular supply of something to make a few $100 (Or $1000! Eek) at a time! Big Grin

Jabbergah

Jabber, no there is no charge for the info.

I buy on and off line, Jabber, but there is a catch...it takes a little elbow grease usually. I make sure they are absolutly spotless, try to take many picture, and I work hard to lay out the description exactly right. These things will make many $ for you!

Actually, I've often had a similar idea. Why not troll for auctions that are HORRIBLY listed (Bad pictures, descriptions full of typos or scary conditions, titles that don't fit the item, etc.) and then resell the items in a friendly, high-quality listing?

Kinda like shopping garage sales for collectibles to resell in an "antique mall".
