If AS didn't fire then I agree - you shouldn't pay. However, as AS did fire and you did win then AS's algorithm will charge you. I still suggest that Grape is using AS incorrectly - he should place his snipe and walk away OR nibble - not both! If the fee is small then don't quible, if it's a lot then file a support request for a refund...

From the FAQs:
http://www.auctionsniper.com/faqbasics.aspx#faq_15a_lbl

It seems to me, that the following text from the above FAQ is either misleading and could cause someone, or anyone, to think they wouldn’t be charged, OR grape has found a bug:
If you placed a bid on eBay for $10.00, then you sniped with us for $10.00, the user would get a "HIGH BIDDER" status message. But if you place a bid on eBay for $10.00, then snipe for $15.00, then you will be charged a snipe credit and the status will be "YOU WON!"

On the other hand, I don’t see any advantage in placing a manual bid AND an equal or lower snipe bid, as ebay would ALWAYS reject it. Once you bid, you can only INCREASE your bid. I must be missing something.

Maybe grape didn’t actually WIN the auction?
I think things may not be as I originally thought.

In my ended tab, the color code is red and my account was not charged yet. I suspect the software knows when it has bid or not bid. If AS has been able to bid over my high bid, then they would have charged me.

So I stand corrected (unless I get charged leter today).

Sorry folks.
