Our brains appear to continue working on problems even after we have gone to sleep. In one study, a group of people was allowed to sleep for eight hours before tackling a problem that had been described to them. Upon returning to the problem, the sleepers were almost three times as likely as the non-sleepers to find a solution to the problem.

RealAge Benefit: Getting 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night can make your RealAge as much as 3 years younger.

Is that the flower? It looks like some kind of an onion type bloom to me. Just a stem and no leaves? hmmm, or a globe amaranthe, but the long stringy parts are not right for that one. I'll try to look in some of my books and let you know if I see anything like that. Very unusual. Never seen it around here. But then the birds are always dropping new "weeds" into my gardens! I have a beautiful red poppy that looks like a carnation bloom, and the leaves look like pale lettuce! Some birdie brought me that one!
I have a few questions re your flower/weed.
Have you ever dug one up to see if it's a bulb?
Is the stem round, triangular or square?
Does it have any smell?
Is it fuzzy/hairy or sticky (primarily on the stem?)
Do you know if what (I believe) you are calling the flower is the flower or is it a seed pod?
Is the reddish looking head hard?
In the picture it looks like another on is next to it, on the left, with a white head, and another head on the longer stem with a yellow head.
It's the first day of summer here. How about there, early spring maybe?
Looking forward to additional pics.
Mrs. M., got a site I can look things up by description? Big Grin

Skinny, welcome and thanks for the questions I hadn't thought of.

Don't know if it's a bulb, but would be willing to check (tomorrow). Stem is round, not sticky and no fuzz anywhere. You're right about the 'flower'. It's hard with no soft pedals, so think it's a seed pod. There are only 2 of them. The white one on the left is one that just has not fully opened yet, encased in an 'onion skin'. Not much of an odor if any. Neighbor said it looks like a retarded onion. Hmm... the weather... Not good at this, but I'd say late late spring early summer, but it's been very wet so far this year. We have some of the lilies in bloom, and the others are still buds. Iris blooms will be done soon (I think), and no Glads yet.
More Pics.

Both plants. Pic on the right is the bottom of the two stems. I guess one could call those dried up leaves?

Next two pics... First is a side view. The white circle is about the size of a quarter. Next pic is the same thing, but viewed from the top.

This is the smaller one on the left, just beginning to open.

I love the things that appear in my yard ... columbine, nightshade, fire weed, blackberry, and lest I forget, the chestnuts my squirrel friends keep planting in my honeysuckle. I let the fire weed grow for two years until I decided that perhaps I didn't want my dandelions taken over by them Wink The blackberry vines and nightshade are a real pain in the a** as are the chestnuts (hard to dig them out). The columbine lived for several years. At least I don't have any volunteer morning glory, and the neighbors ivy is managable on my fence.

One of these days I'm going to rip out all the grass and plant natives. Hmmm ... I wonder where I'll put the skunk-weed?
