Advice is the noun and advise is the verb over here, too. I don't know what you mean by doing the same to licence/license.

His numberplate was DEFENS which made even less sense in the UK where it would have been DEFENC - good film though!

Advice/advise work the same in English. Similarly, licence is the noun, and license the verb, as well.
Other like pairs that seem to get swapped due to total reliance on spell checkers are:
Complimentary & complementary
Principal & principle
Stationary & stationery
Diverse & divers
Each pair member has a totally different meaning to t'other one.

And don't forget loose & lose

Confusables:

minute/minute
lead/lead
read/read
live/live

I am confused..I think, but I know that the US spelling is license and the British is licence.
Same meaning and use.

My dictionary lists license as the correct spelling for both the noun and the verb. At the bottom of the entry there's a note saying that licence is the British spelling.

I remember the loose and lose discussion.

Uh, Mike, how are you going to know whether we're pronouncing those words the right way? You're waaaaay out of hearing range!

Has anyone else noticed all the misspellings in the online news sites? Sometimes even the headlines contain misspellings. They're probably in such a big hurry to get the news out that they don't double check. I know that I make my share of mistakes too, but if something's going to be posted to the web I think it should be as correct as possible. People are likely to see all the mistakes and wonder of their reporting is accurate.

What drives me crazy are the word spelled incorrectly in auction descriptions! That certainly is a no hurry task!
