It's a trade off between a long enough lead time to insure that the snipe gets place, but short enough lead time to maintain the element of surprise. Also, one has to factor in how important the item is. More important, longer lead time.
How often are your auctions sniped? How often are your auctions sniped by more then one bidder? How often will Mrs. M say, "I told you so"? We're all pretty much following Sara's advice.
It's takes awhile to place a retaliatory snipe.
