First-timer .....
Why, if I was already the high bidder, did AC enter a bid in the same amount at closing? My winning bid was $32.55 and AC entered a snipe of $32.55 @ closing. As a result of the duplicate bid I lost a snipe point (or whatever its called) that I did not need to. Am I supposed to bid only via AC rather thru eBay?

Should I retract my AC bids on other items I already have proxy bids on to avoid losing all my "trial" points?

I are con-foozed!!

AS will send any bid you give it that is a valid bid.

The only differance between a bid you place directly with eBay, and a bid placed via AS is the timing. When AS bids, it bids the Max you gave it, and BOTH are proxy bids.

Usually (there are exceptions) we snipers don't place an early bid on eBay. We like to keep our interest in an item to ourselves.

Get it?

I don't understand why it bid what I already bid if there was no need for it.

On the other items I have already bid on via ebay, and later on AS, am I going to loose all those trial snipe points too? (I found out about AS after I placed these other bids and had just lost a previous auction in the last 8 secs. <Grrr>Wink

For now I am fighting fire with fire.

Should I assume that in the future I should not place a bid directly on eBay?!

AS sends ALL bids you entered. As long as they are valid bids, they will be accepted by eBay.

Yes. You should cancel the snipes entered on AS to save them from being used if you win. (snipes are only used if you win an auction)

I only place bids using one or the other, almost NEVER using both.

ps Are you new to eBay as well? Do you know what a 'Proxy' bid is?

I've been using eBay for two-three years. I am new to your service however. I only found out about AS after I placed the other bids on eBay and lost another in the last 8 secs. (And was locked out from posting a bid too.)

I guess I am screwed on the other two auctions. I do not want to loose those items to another "sniper" as before.

AS is not magic. It will not ensure you a win. Both bids are proxy bids, and if it's not high enough, you still loose. So if the amount you bid on eBay and the amount you gave AS are the same, there is no need to use AS. Cancel the snipes on AS and they won't be used.

Mrs. M,
The auction was:
#2368893737 H/R SUPERIOR JEWELER'S TORCH

No, it was not the highest bid on my snipe. My highest snipe bid was about $2.00 higher than my eBay placed winning bid.

Rick,
So the charge is for snipes made, not for items already won?

Also, the last link you sent at 5:49am did not come through. It is red "X'd" and won't work.
Thanks All
Rick,
I think I am starting to get the picture.

Two things have to take place here to acrue a charge from AS.
1) AS has to place a snipe and
2) I have to win whether it is my own Ebay bid or AS's.

If for example, even though AS places a snipe, but somone else bids a higher bid, above my max AS bid and I loose the auction, then there is not charge or loss of credits. Correct?
<shew!> Its too early in the A.M. for this kinda mental calisthenics. I am not a morning person !!!

OK all,
I think I understand now.

Not to confuse things, but ...
In the situation I now have, I placed two bids on eBay. However, I placed them and then thought "Oops, that maybe not high enough to insure a win (from past experience on this type of item)". Rather than loosing my early bid status I placed a snipe bid at the higher "shoulda done that" amount.

(I Think)You are saying to delete the snipes and
just go ahead and up my bid on eBay and save the AS credits? Right?

I will be effectively ace my own current winning eBay bid (by bidding AGAIN, against myself)and up the price whatever increment eBay has for this item. <shew!>

Thanks all! I'll convey this to the others I referred to AS.

That's up to you. In your tourch example, we're talking a free snipe. Even if you didn't have a free one, the charge would be only 31 or 32 cents.

'Aceing' your own bid will not increase the price for you on eBay.

Anyway, Good Luck to you.

For YOU, the proper technique is to bid the MAXIMUM bid you are willing to pay on ebay. Then you ALSO place the EXACT same amount on AuctionSniper with a lead time of 29 seconds.

If they are the same as your proxy bid you made on eBay already then yes.

I've credited you another free snipe. The key to sniping is to never bid on eBay at all so they dont know you're coming. But I assume you already had these bids in on eBay because you just joined us and didnt know you'd be placing snipes which is understandable.

Mike,
The name of the game is paying the least amount possible for a item you want.

And please remember it is not the last bid that wins an auction, but the highest bid.

Sniping avoids bidding wars that drive prices up and only takes advantage of most peoples propensity to not bid their highest amount they are willing to pay.

"We snipers usually do not bid manually..."

Have you ever thought about a situation of the kind as follows?
Somebody offers some rare collectible and, during the auction runs, he drops the item. Accordingly, he stops the auction since the item is damaged but privately offers the damaged item to the bidders starting with the current high bidder.

Can not happen?? You're wrong!! Happens more often you may think. I USUALLY BID DIRECTLY AND (!!) VIA AS!!! You may not call me sniper, but I used AS extensively and successfully. At least up to now. I just lost a free snipe because of the same problem this thread is about.

This is for the AS responsibles: I had this situation before and never was billed for such a snipe. I hope this has been a mistake. If not, i.e. if AS continues billing snipes of items I would have won anyway, I will find another sniper. AS is not the only one.
I agree that it's frustrating to be charged for a snipe that didn't seem to do anything, but let's think about that a different way.

I'm assuming, of course, that your snipe was higher than your proxy (otherwise what was the point of doubling up?). What if someone else had sniped that auction with a bid just a few cents over your proxy? In that case, you'd be thanking AS for "giving" you the win!

If you're going to bid both manually and by AS, then think of AS as your safety net -- the proxy bid was placed, the "safety" snipe bid went in as requested, and you won the auction. Fair is fair!

And welcome!
...for the link to the AS comment. I understand the motivation of AS to prevent people trying to circumvent AS in case they're sitting at the machine when the auction in question ends. However, there is a time limit for deleting snipes before the auction ends. I don't know the span, but even if this a technical problem and the span is only a few seconds, nevertheless this situation is no more acceptable for me. As I wrote before, this policy is not as it was when I joined AS. So, I will use AS to empty my balöance and then look for a sniper with better service more convenient policy.

By the way, the posting of the AS representative referred to in the link given by Rick before stresses that AS does not charge failed snipes. I think this is self evident and does not need mentioning. In general AS shows the same trend, which applies to ebay itsself. They try to test how much they can charge until customers stop using the service. ebay may have some kind of market power allowing rude policy. AS has not. And ebay will loose as well, however on longer time scale.

Thank you for your comments and have fun!
...doesn't like AS charging for a winning snipe if puzzle has the winning proxy bid when the snipe is placed. However, I really can't see how AS could change that without making the programming more complicated.

Apparantly puzzle feels there is a "better" sniping service out there, or at least one that better matches his/her bidding style. Well, OK -- goodbye & good luck! Smile
