Newbie Question- Is an AS bid a proxy bid?

You do.
The bid that is placed is the maximum amount you have bid.
The winning bid is the highest bid placed compared to all other bids.

eBay will only increase your bid by as much as the next previously placed bid or the next bid increment.

You still may need to account for bid increments to make sure your bid is high enough, but essentially, you would win the auction in the scenario you stated above.

That makes a short lead time not as critical- as long as one doesn't increase the lead time enough that others have time to react.

I have developed a philosophy when bidding on items on eBay: first of all, I try to decide how much I really want the item. If it's a one of a kind or I've been looking for a while, obviously that will be more.

Then, I just set a limit on how much I am willing to pay. For a given item that might be had at retail for $150 and is now at $120 on eBay, I calculate possible shipping costs, then make sure they and my bid don't go past $150. Then I don't worry if I win or lose, because it's karma. I won't kick myself for not having bid more, because I went through that argument with myself beforehand.

Auction Sniper just makes all these things so EASY!!!!! The only auction I lost with AS, I knew I wasn't willing to pay that much for.

And that's one out of maybe 25 auctions I've won so far . . .

So I take bjt's responese to mean I can put a snipe in with AS for $100.00 on a $20.00 item and forget about it. If the max bid from someone else is $25.00 with the next increment $5.00, I pay $30.00 and win. Correct?

Yes, that would be correct in a 5.00 increment.

Of course, never snipe any higher than you would be willing to pay. What if some nut bid a 25.00 item up to just under your 100.00 snipe.

Research is a good thing. I have seen items sell for more than new. It's nice to 'hold your hand' until the last few seconds. Manual sniping is OK if your able to be at the computer when the auction expires. I don't always have that luxury if the auction end when I at work.

Yes, I sure have too. One of the nicest features of AS is that you can change your mind almost to the last..how many times before I joined AS, I had bidder's regret!
