No, I only looked at the pictures in the paper (I don't own a tv), too many good books to read and too many good records to listen to to bother with "the vast wasteland"

I was thinking more along the lines of the "1812 Overture"; you know, the one with the cannons. The 1964 Mercury mono recording with Antal Dorati/Minneapolis Symphony is about the best that I have heard.

Can't say I'm familiar with that one old boy. I do heartily recommend the Telarc 1979 recording with Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Symphony, however. It comes with a "health warning" for your speakers because of the real cannon (not recommended for headphones).
By Jove, for real classical "heavy metal" though (take note GG), it's hard to beat Stokowski and the London Symphony performing Wagner, what!

I have both (the "health warning" was still in mine; bought 'used') and both use real cannons. They are both excellent recordings (I wanted to say that the Mercury trounced the Telarc
), I just prefer the Mercury. I saw a photomagnification of a spot on the Telarc that showed an almost 90 degree turn in the groove; no wonder they put the warning in the jacket. I understand that Telarc issued a second pressing that was not quite so "violent"; I think that is the pressing that I have. Emo, if you are interested in vinyl, here is a link to the "Vinyl Asylum":

Thanks old man. Actually I have the CD of the Telarc 1812 as I understood only the best vinyl players could manage it without a bally house-brick on the tone arm. My Sennheiser headphones can only manage a sort of sickly "Blat" when the cannon go orf but the loudspeakers flatten the curtains behind them against the window.
Poor old Wagner always seems to be in the "love him or loath him" category! Bit of a bore, what?
