OK. I don't want to be accused of not having a sense of humor (something that everyone thinks is other people's problem), but I can't find the laugh-track. I know they can't be serious. I don't see a smiley, but - it's a joke, right?

"Little Red Riding Hood" by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
Because Little Red Riding Hood brought a bottle of wine to her grandmother, authorities claimed the story "condones the use of alcohol."

Sometimes the simple approach works best (and should be considered first). But those were the heady days of NASA, when they ate up 5 or 7% of the national budget...

...and sheez, if a writing instrument cost $12 million to develop, how much did the TANG cost?? Eek

You mean like I suggest on one of my websites at www.operationmailback.com? Smile
Hi Geekline,
I wasn't able to access your site. I'd love to hear any new ideas for thwarting junk-mailers, telemarketers, and spammers. Big Grin
Hi Rick,
No, there's no joke about it. I found out about the banning and removal of "controversial" books in one of my classes. The professor said that often the people who are opposing a book haven't even read the book they're objecting to. They've only heard about it. It's totally insane and I've been choosing my reading material from off that list for some months now. (BINed and sniped a few off eBay, too! Cool) It's scary to think about that sort of censorship. Fortunately, what's banned or removed in one place or school district might still be found in another. Since you're into the classics, I thought you'd be interested in this.

Christine,

It doesn't make any sense.

"The Bible"
It "contains language and stories that are inappropriate for children of any age," including tales of incest and murder. "There are more than three hundred examples of 'obscenities' in the book."

The Harry Potter books.

"The Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum
For its portrayal of a good witch;and because it said that traits such as courage, intelligence and compassion can be personally developed rather than God-given.

And so on, and so on.
Hi Rick,
You're right. It makes no sense. I had hard time believing some of the books on there, too. But these books have all been challenged, removed, or banned in at least one place. Here are some more websites you might want to check out. They're both put out by the American Library Association.

http://www.ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbooksweek/challengedbanned/challengedbanned.htm

and

http://www.ala.org/bbooks/

You can do a Google search and find out more, too.

Here's another article for you, Rick. You asked about book burnings. Somebody had a book burning in Pennsylvania. The Harry Potter books were some of the things burned.

http://kansascity.bizjournals.com/kansascity/stories/2001/04/23/editorial2.html

I remember hearing about it when it happened and forgot all about it until your post.
Last summer I was teasing a friend about being an adult and addicted to the Harry Potter books. She told me to shut up and read them. Now I'm a Harry Potter fan, too.
I'd like you to know I'm not joking about all this stuff. And it's pretty scary that there are people out there who are actually doing this sort of thing.

Probably because the forum included a "," on the end of the URL or if you tried to access it last night - I was having all kinds of server problems. I tried to upgrade the server's kernal to a more secure version and all hell broke loose. It was not fun and it kept me awake until almost 5 AM.

Try this: http://www.operationmailback.com

That is my site concerning getting back at junk mailers. I have a perfect soultion for telemarketers - don't answer the telephone. I never answer the phone so I am never bothered with them.

Now, as for SPAM - I have a big problem with spam and I also have a great soultion for spammers: sue them out of business. In just a few days, the court is going to order a seizure and sale of the assets of a spammer's company in Traverse City, Michigan to satisfy a judgement I have against them. One down - thousands to go. Smile

You can read about my nationwide spammer lawsuit-filing tour at the URL below. I have cases pending across the country and I am getting ready to file even more in the coming weeks:

http://www.indianaspam.com

If you are really intrested in getting rid of spammers by suing them, there is another site you should check out as well - www.spamcon.org. They have a great mailing list of like minded people from all over the country who are willing to help people out.

Well, at least they've brought the burning into the 21st Century - they now burn CD's and videos. I can understand why book-burners would want to burn "Fahrenheit 451", but Disney's "Pinocchio" vidoes? Well, I guess history will continue to repeat itself.

I am considering ordering a bunch of tax forms from the IRS, piling them in a great big pile and burning those. I trying to get our local chapter of the Libertarian Party (of which I am a member and the media communications coordinator) to sanction the event. I've got a feeling it would make all the news wires...
I don't recall that he even said it, did he?

(is THAT where you got the impression he was in favor of book-burning? F451 is *about* book-burning -- I think he was being facetious... at least I hope so...)

You might want to do more research. I know this is a lot to ask, but could you read my post on this topic, and if you have additional doubts, then:

Have you ever read "Fahrenheit 451"? If you had, then you would understand why book-burners would want to burn in.

Back to my "book burning statement". Looks like there's a bunch of people looking for something when it's not there, or perhaps some people don't read, books nor posts. LOOK OUT - NOW RICK WANTS TO BURN POSTS.

Some people think the silliest things on a forum.

(There's a bunch of rollie-eye graemlins - with the imaginations that some people have it must be easy for them to see).

Hi Rick,
Here's an applicable Oscar Wilde quote for you:
"Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much."
--Oscar Wilde
The word enemies is too strong here, but I still like the quote! Big Grin

OK, if we're gonna start rumors about Rick burning things, here are a few suggestions:
1. Burning rubber on the freeway
2. Burning up keyboards posting to the forum
3. Burning whatever he's cooking on the grill
Any other ideas?

--Mark Twain

Puppy,

I noticed you stayed away from dam_mad last night. Was that wisdom, luck, or were you posted-out? Reminds me of a feeding frenzy. I think you'll agree with me on this - once someone has an opinion on something, nothing anyone says will change that opinion, at least on forums.

Notice how most people say they are open-minded? Try this experiment - tell someone that you don't think they are open-minded. If they argue with you, then you have proved your point.
When people come on with a Mad, I hate to even post with them at all. That type of personalty is hard and useless to deal with, IMO.

Rick, I thought the book burning thing was really digging in the bottom of the barrel! I guess we better do a word , phrase check before we post from now on, lest we get hauled away!! Wink Big Grin

Well, yeah, but they can be fun! Wink

It was interesting to see, between my jabbing & Shirley's feather smoothing, dam_mad actually got a little more rational, except in the continued dead horse beating, of course. Big Grin Roll Eyes

I feel like the ghosts of posts-past (Dickens or Rickens). A little like reincarnating lost forum members. Their words live on after they leave. I would hope someone did that for me someday.
