Paul, thanks for the suggestion. I've been doing a daily search for three months for that item. I had seen it before, but in nowhere as good a condition. I'll keep looking and I will ask the auction winner if he's willing to sell it...but I can't go very much higher, well.. maybe a little bit..ok, maybe more than a little bit..maybe even more than more than a little bit.. oh, dear.. am I thinking of nuclear bidding again?

Thank you all for suggesting I contact him. Now I'm waiting to hear from him how much and whether the Corday lamp can be sent to me directly from the seller.
Think he didn't expect it to go that high?

Linda, hope you get it bought at the price you want to pay. Good luck with him!

Seller may send it to you, but is not suppose to. One of the scams some try, is to get a seller to send an item to them, when someone else has won and paid for it.
CONGRATS and Good Luck.
While I was building up my collection of Hazel Atlas/Gay Fad state tumblers there were a couple that normally go for the big $$$ (Alabama, in particular, because it has some depictions I feel are in poor taste, but others collect avidly). Kept loosing the auctions because I refused to bid more than $20 as there are 48 in the collection.
My patience was finally rewarded by a seller that listed the glass incorrectly! Seems no one else was searching on spelling errors and Anchor Hocking glasses (Hazel Atlas's logo is a big H and A - people think it stands for Anchor Hocking).
Bottom line was I got the glass that normally went for around $35 for $8! Woo Hoo!
My advise is to broaden your search to include other possible listings ... and sort by 'newly listed' to find inexpensive Buy-It-Now's before everyone else! Also, a little patience works wonders

The nuclear sniper is asking an additional $50 over his price. My friends who have experience with vintage perfumes are telling me not to buy it - that if I can wait they can get an equally nice one for at least $200 less and that I'd be nuts to take this offer. I'll wait.. though it was very, very hard for me to make that decision.
I do check minature/minture, cordy, lampsposts, perfuem and other possible typos/misspellings, bj - I caught onto that within a few days of starting to look at eBay auctions.. wish I learned that quickly about sniping!

Considering that you would not enjoy the protections of an eBay transaction, I would say waiting is worth it in this case.
I concur with Chatter. He is trying to take advantage of your sentiment for the item! And, you have no protection whatsoever!
Linda,
I was a little surprised when it was suggested to you to contact the buyer. I deferred to those on this forum who are more experienced at this stuff than me. It would seem to me that there would be NO WAY you would be able to negotiate a price with the buyer that would be less than his purchase price.
If we suspect the buyer is a nuclear bidder, he's in agony right now trying to decide whether to back out of the deal or not! When he got your offer, he let out a big loud, "Whew!" and even thought he could turn a little profit on the deal! Especially when you told him your emotional attachment to the item!
I think you could contact the SELLER with a friendly note asking about the item he listed that you bid on and lost. Tell him you're really interested in the item (I wouldn't share your emotional attraction to the item -- that severely restricts your negotiating power!) and does he know where you might find another one like it? Oh, and, BTW if he has any problem whatsoever with the winning bidder balking on the deal, you'd like him to drop you a note and maybe you & he could come to terms that would save him from having to go through the bother of relisting the item.
That way, YOU set yourself up as the seller's "ace in the hole". If the winning bidder starts hemming & hawing about the price of the item, shipping, or whatever -- the seller can just say "Forget it! I got others interested in the item!" and contact you!
At that point, you know he is willing to accept & you are willing to pay your max bid, BUT you could still take a stab at negotiating a lower price. The price of the item before teruk arrived on the scene was $309. If you'd offer $400 or $450, that may be acceptable to the seller, or he may counter-offer something less than your max bid. Then you can decide whether to accept his counter offer or propose another of your own. Alternatively, the seller may insist if you want the item, you pay your MAX bid. You can decide at that point whether to attempt further negotiations or accept it at your MAX or pass on it and allow the seller to relist and take your chances on bidding on it again. Regardless, if the story would take this route, you could end up with the item at or below YOUR bid instead of at something MORE than you MAX bid if the deal is made with the winning bidder/buyer.
Just my thoughts on the matter.

I'm with you, Jabber (gee, I think I've said THAT before!). Go to the seller, offer to be his backup, and if you're lucky enough to get the chance, try to negotiate a lower price.
One related question, though -- once upon a time (Ok, so I've now said THAT before in a post, too) I was told that if you're the backup bidder, you're still obligated to honor your bid if the winner backs out. Is that not true? One of those myths that the sellers on the ebay community boards want us to THINK is true?

Jabber, I see nothing wrong with what she did, but I also concur with you that she now could contact the seller. I don't know why this is so rare (what she wants) but I'll bet it isn't as rare as she thinks. I would wagger that another will be coming down the pike soon. That's usually the way it happens.
LOL, my sig left!!

Because of the unusual extreme last-minute jump in price in Linda's auction, I thought the seller may be open to a negotiated price between Linda's LAST winning bid (before teruk showed up) and her MAX bid.
You MAY be thinking of being the 2nd highest bidder in an auction when the winning bid is withdrawn or cancelled. In THAT case you become the winning bidder and ARE obligated if you are still the winning bidder at the end of the auction. Once the auction is OVER, ONLY the winning bidder is OBLIGATED.
That's how I understand it.

quote:I'm shooting from the hip here! Didn't go to ebay help to read up on it. But that just doesn't make sense that the LOSING bidder becomes OBLIGATED AFTER the auction closes. What if the bidder had gone and won the same item in ANOTHER auction when he saw he was losing THIS auction. It's strickly an option at that point. If the 2nd chance deal is proffered to the lower bidder, there's nothing obligatory about it -- just take it or leave it.

If the top bidder backs out before the close of the auction, the next in line is obligated. If the winner backs out after the close then no, the runner up is not obligated.
Thanks for the clarification, that makes more sense than the way it was originally told to me. The poster in question at the time was talking about budgeting his funds to pay for his auctions -- He said that he had to be sure he always had funds available for all the bids he currently had in, as WELL as all the bids he had made on auctions that closed in the last ten days. Made no sense to me at the time, but he insisted.

I'm informing the nuclear sniper that I'm not going to buy from them. I'm feeling like they were trying to take advantage of my missing my mom, and that really is the pits. Some of my new eBay friends assure me that they will find me one for far less within a few weeks.. or if not, they cat get me one at the big perfume get-together coming up. So, I'll wait.
I want to thank you all for lots of informative input!
Now, I'm going off to try to figure out what I need to know to sell on eBay.. I've got some perfumes I had bought when I didn't know much and didn't have friends who were far more expert, that I want to offer for sale.. and 52 limoges plates that my dad collected over the years.. and gobs of dollhouse stuff. I've decided to finally get some room in my basement!<G>

Linda, good luck with your new business -- I would be willing to bet that there are quite a few sellers here who started out by clearing out some of their extra "junk"... some are probably still at it!!!
Is there any way to take this whole discussion private with the same people? I just got an email back in response to the one I sent the seller. It's really not something I think should be discussed in a public forum.
Any of you are welcome to contact me privately, though I'm not sure if you can since when I post my email address it is removed.
