1) There is no way of discovering how much an opponent's proxy bid is. Your best tactic is to make your bid the maximum amount you're willing to spend on the item. That way if you're outbid you have the solace of knowing that you didn't want to pay as much as the winner did anyway.
2) Just line it up on AS and watch the fur fly. No need to do anything more once you've set up the snipe.

Good luck! Smile
You're welcome. There *is* a way in which you can "size up" your competition to the point where you can predict with a fair degree of accuracy what his maximum (proxy) bid is likely to be. This involves looking at his bidding record under the "Search" tab that says "By Bidder." If you'd like more details, ask.
Since you do not know what the other bidder's highest bid is going to be, I suggest you resurch the item under the Completed Listings tab, under Search. Then bid your highest amount.

I usually need to bid more for items that are really hot, and less for items that have only one or two bids on them.

I also have my snipe ready with Auction Sniper, and then towards the last 30 minuets or so of the auction, I watch it to see how high it is going to go. This approch gives me enough time to go back and modify my top bid with Auction Sniper if it is something I really want, or a rare find.

Good Luck,
Laura Wink

I would like to know more about your method-- it sounds like a very interesting idea. Would you explain how to do it, please?

Best,
Walter.
I do like revived threads! At least it means that people are searching the archives!

Do not do this as it would be unethical and underhand:
1. create a new eBay ID using a new hotmail address
2. bid on the item you're interested in with a bid of, say, 1 million
3. check out the opposition's max (now visible to you)
4. retract the bid
5. go back to mugging grannies and the like!
