Mrs. M and bjt,

I think Steve has a good idea. I think if we stay in the "General forum", it might work out better. I think personal comments are OK.

And there's no reason one of us can't start a new topic in this forum.

Let me know if that's OK with you two.

P.S. This forum has a kind-of chat room, only it's in "My Pop" under "Private Topics". It isn't as easy as here. Lets give this a try, if the two of you agree?

Rick, I am here! My only rebutal to the person is that questions are normally always answered. We do get on to some silly things sometimes, but on the otherhand, that happens generally when it is dead here. Doesn't make a hill of beans difference to me where we post, so general is fine. Roll Eyes

I am in favor of using eBay General for chatting.

I see a problem using Private Topics because new people won't be able to join in because the posts aren't available for public viewing.

I'm sure we can be creative in keeping the string of conversation going through the use of topic headings to reference any discussion that ensues as a result of another posting or question.

The thing that I see happening is that these posts are so spontaneous, that at what point do we decide that the question has been answered and we need to move to another forum for any further discussion? Confused

At the point where anyone says, "Take it to General," I guess. bjt, you wrote (upstairs): "Seriously, one of the reasons that these forums become so friendly is because they are unstructured. If the forum had a moderator, perhaps the conversation would stay on track."

I am the list owner of a discussion list. The rule is that nothing which has no relationship to the subject for which the list was formed should be brought up. The list owner is supposed to enforce that. Yeesh. I've been called a "Nazi," a "tyrant," and worse trying to keep people in line. Any moderator has to have a hide as thick as that of a rhino (no offense, RhinoBoy, if you're still with us). Also, there has to be some sort of enforcement available, like suspension or banishment from the list. None of us here has that kind of authority.

Not only that, but there are a lot of highly creative people on that list, just like the snipers that populate this Forum. They can dream up ways of bringing in extraneous subject matter and linking it to the list purpose so it's "legal."

I don't see anything wrong with wishing someone "good morning," and I don't think Basrah did either. But chatting about grandchildren and the weather -- and I'm guilty of both -- does sort of detract from the Forum purpose.
I am in favor of that.

I also hope that if basrah has a change of heart, they come back to the forum and have some fun again!

Just as a side note...
Have any of you gone into the eBay chat rooms??
They are REALLY hard to follow!
The regulars have their own language and no one is talking about the subject that is the main theme of the chat room!

Let's not have one person's opinion make us feel bad about our innocent and pleasant conversations, OK?Smile

I don't think anyone can accuse us of allowing the forum to "just lay there" with no new posts!

It is a lively and friendly place to post a question and see some fun things on eBay that I wouldn't normally find!

I have actualy learned some interesting things about eBay from this forum and its discussions that after 4 years I never knew!

Thank you to all that have participated in this forum. Smile

HIGH FIVE (or would that be "high four")!

It appears that the four of us agree on this method, and the nice thing is that we DON'T have to be as concerned about others. Those "serious" types, can get some "serious" (with a dash of humor) answers. Those "humorous" types, can get some "humor" (with a dash of serious) answers.

This is actually BETTER. Now I don't have to be concerned about "stepping" on someone's topic.

I prefer "Take it to General", especially over my "go down" or "take it under".

"tyrant"? Well, at least tyrants can be, and usually are, intelligent. It must take a lot of brains to be a tyrant over a protracted period of time. I bet they haven't called you a redneck?

THIS IS A GREAT IDEA, STEVE! This is going to be so much better. More freedom, and a lot easier to follow what's going on between us. I'd say, "you ALWAYS come up with good ideas", but I know how you feel about generalizations, so I'll say, "every once in a while you come up with a good idea". Razz

P.S. - It wasn't just basrah. I can give you posts from 3 or 4 others that were saying basically the same thing. I was beginning to think it, and based on Steve's "late" start yesterday and low activity this morning, I'd say he was thinking it as well. basrah has a way of objectively "cleaning" things up around here. Anyway, it doesn't matter - THIS IS MUCH BETTER! I so disliked others "prying". Wink

Mrs. M - I've been meaning to ask - did that $500 sniper turn out to be a gentlemen/gentlewomen?

bjt - I've done a "little" looking at ebay's Groups. You are right - dead. There are two sniping groups, and the one title "Snipe! Don't Gripe" has a good number of members (for ebay). Also, this is the group leader's "Me" page:
http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/black_widow_sniper (one very "serious" sniper Eek - probably won't like our cozy, little chat-room.) Cool

Rick,
I think the black widow got some of their tactics - at least their nomenclature from the AS forum!! Eek

I recognize many of the same terms and philosophies we have discussed here on the forum ("not what you think you can win it for, but what's the most you'd be willing to pay for the widget.", "Sniping just cuts down on nibblers attacking your proxy.")

Thanks Steve, for your suggestion to use the eBay, General for the chat forum. A very good compromise, to be sure - keeps everyone happy.

There is nothing that turns someone off more than going to a forum, only to find that there haven't been any recent posts for a month or more. You know your question will go unanswered and you won't be back.

Just happened to come back to the Forum right after the gent posted, that's all. Rick, you said 'I was beginning to think it, and based on Steve's "late" start yesterday and low activity this morning, I'd say he was thinking it as well.'

Don't read anything into my occasional "late" starts or absences. This time of year is a busy one for me, splitting firewood for the coming winter and generally getting ready for the real cold weather that's just ahead up here on the mountaintop. Also, it's football season and I happened to have played a bit of it -- middle linebacker -- at college so I watch a lot of it on the boob tube. Right now, for instance, I'm watching the Steelers maul the Ravens. Eek
I know!
I don't have any argument for the folks that like to chat on their forums and chat rooms, but I don't feel that I can join in because of all the "inside jokes" and lingo.
I suppose it could get like that in any chat situation, but the posts are few and the subject is WAY off track from the topic that is posted.
I also found a lot of advertising on them from the members that frequent the chat room.

I would really like the AS Chat Forum to remain as open to the members as possible and to offer any newbie a sense of good information combined with a friendly atmosphere and...chat. Smile
Yes Ms M,I live in the north.
Right now the weather is very warm and pleasant during the day, but the nights are cool.
Today the temperature got into the upper 80's but the evenings are between 48-55 degrees.
We have had a real dry spell here this summer, so everything is dry.
The extended forcast for the upcoming week is highs in the low 80's - lows in the low 60's.

That's the weather...now for sports Big Grin
