Just goes to show you what some British ingenuity, coupled with a despotic maniac’s influence, can accomplish.quote:... it was a British Army officer who set the factory going after WWII but Adolf was involved somewhere in getting the original design off the ground!
I'm British so what does that make you Rick?

Citroen DS21 - 1972.
2.2 litre fuel injection, semi-automatic gears, hydraulic suspension (no springs or shockers)
Originally created in 1955 when its launch created more column inches in the media than Stalin's death.
Had several firsts: disk brakes all round, electronic fuel injection, power steering, headlights turn with steering, power brakes.
And the ultimate in comfort - not surpassed yet.
Poor marketing, and crippling legislation.quote:Originally posted by Rick:
Once borrowed a Citroen for a few days. I think it was in ’89 or ‘90, and I think it was a turbo, but that’s fairly dated, as is my memory. Citroen’s didn’t seem to make it in the States. Don’t know why.

I gather you’re not a fan of Porsches.
The aircooled flat sixes are OK, but the ones based on a VW van do nothing for me.
Would be no use for me, anyhow - no room for camping or shopping and parts costs in the realms of fantasy. Cars with three doors are no use for us, either.
That IS nice. It sounds like it would be fun to drive around in it or maybe take it on short trips so everybody can admire it!
Good point. Why didn’t I see it before? With your ingenuity, coupled with my influence, imagine what we can accomplish. Might not be as successful as VW, but I’m up for the challenge.quote:I'm British so what does that make you Rick?
P.S. My ancestors were GERMAN! (That explains a lot)

Usually long trips - better on EU roads, as is LHD.

Crippling legislation in the U.S. or France? (Disregard that – silly question.)quote:Poor marketing, and crippling legislation.
Maybe the body style of the Citroen was too advanced for Americans.
I don't like the style. It reminds me of the old Datsun. I think most of the major countries have produced some fine cars...and some duds!

I always liked the Citroen DS 19; from the front it sort of looked like an angry clam.
I always wanted a Sunbeam. Do they still make them? I wonder how much it would cost to haul one over to the states
Such things are subjective. When the DS arrived in 1955, you could not ignore it! The competition made it instantly obsolete - even in the 1960s, English cars had aerodynamics like a garden shed - witness the Viva mentioned.

Sunbeam disappeared in the 1960s, IIRC. They were owned by the Rootes group - some models were rebadged Hillman Minxes.
There are still quite a few about - what sort did you want, bj?
Which Sunbeam? The Tiger is my favourite with its V8 engine!

Since Hitler and VW was somewhat popular, more Hitler trivia:
Hitler was a vegetarian and a teetotaler, and he didn’t chase women – a regular health nut. History might have been different if he had a steak with some red wine from time to time.
Also (and a lot of people don’t know this), his invasion of Poland was really the result of a midlife crises – he had just turned 50 (Aries). Pity he didn’t buy himself a red German sports car and chase after women.
P.S. Don't remember his status as a smoker, but I'm sure it was exemplary.

Hitler did not smoke ( he had a lung condition), but did take drugs and gave his troops drugs called Yaba ( nazi Speed). His long time lover, Ava Braun, shot herself in the neck once because of Hitler's other women, but she survived it.

Old Hitler (Schickelgruber) didn’t fool around. There was some gal (I think a cousin or some relative) that he fell in love with early on, but that was about it. Ava was his squeeze, and they married before committing suicide.
Wasn’t aware of his lung condition. Do you know what it was? I remember he was temporarily blinded by mustard gas in WWI (was it called WWI before there was a WWII?), which was the reason he never used it during WWII. Maybe the mustard gas caused his condition?
Good news: Sounds like we agree that he was a vegetarian and a teetotaler (I still think he, and the world, would have been better off if he had bought himself a red German sports car).

There was one of those in a driveway near us until they moved, recently. For some reason, they were never very popular when new. Now, at 81.9p per litre, less so!
I've been a vegetarian since the late 1980's and don't smoke, drink, use drugs, or drive German cars!
Mrs. M., there are plenty of old Sunbeam cars still available. If you're serious about wanting one, you might want to check out Hemmings Motor News. It's a huge magazine that's nothing but for sale listings of vintage cars, car parts, and car shows.

Hilter had a "lung condition" from childhood.
About his women:
Hitler liked the company of beautiful and frivolous women and avoided women who wanted to discuss political issues. His attitude towards women is reflected in his comment that: "A highly intelligent man should take a primitive and stupid woman." On another occasion he said: "I detest women who dabble in politics."
This was one of the reasons Hitler tended to be attracted to women much younger than himself, and there was a scandal when Maria Reiter, a sixteen-year-old girl he was involved with, tried to commit suicide.
In 1928 Hitler asked his half-sister, Angela Raubal, to be his housekeeper. She agreed and arrived with her twenty-year old daughter, Geli Raubal. Hitler, who had now turned forty, became infatuated with Geli and rumours soon spread that he was having an affair with his young niece. Hitler became extremely possessive and Emil Maurice, his chauffeur, who also showed interest in Geli, was sacked.
The couple lived together for over two years. The relationship with Geli was stormy and they began to accuse each other of being unfaithful. Geli was particularly concerned about Eva Braun, a seventeen-year-old girl who Hitler took for rides in his Mercedes car.
Geli also complained about the way Hitler controlled her life On September 8, 1931, Hitler left for Hamburg after having a blazing row with Geli over her desire to spend some time in Vienna. Hitler was heard to shout at Geli as he was about to get into his car: "For the last time, no!" After he left Geli shot herself through the heart with a revolver.
When he heard the news Hitler threatened to take his own life but was talked out of it by senior members of the Nazi Party. One consequence of Geli's suicide was that Hitler became a vegetarian. He claimed that meat now reminded him of Geli's corpse.
Rumours about Geli's death spread quickly amongst Hitler's enemies. It was claimed that Geli had been badly beaten up by Hitler before she shot herself. Another story involved Geli committing suicide because she was expecting Hitler's child. Some people claimed she was murdered by Heinrich Himmler because she was threatening to blackmail Hitler. Little evidence has been provided to support these suggestions and the reasons for her death remain a mystery
After the death of Geli Raubal, Hitler began to see more of Eva Braun. However he still had relationships with other women Hitler was especially fond of film-stars and one girlfriend the actress Renate Mueller, committed suicide by throwing herself out of a hotel window in Berlin.
Eva was extremely jealous of Hitler's other girlfriends and in 1932 she also attempted suicide by shooting herself in the neck. Doctors managed to save her life, and after this incident Hitler seemed to become more attached to Eva and saw less of other women.

A while back I read something about a guy who was claiming to be the reincarnation of Adolf Hitler. He was wanting to sue a school textbook company for libel.
My guess is he probably lost....

What a nut!!! LMAO!!
Still don't know what the "lung condition" was?
There are only three recorded affairs that Hitler had; Marie Reiter (did attempt suicide), Geli Raubal (commited suicide), and Eva Braun (attempted suicide twice – second time with pills). None of the relationships were concurrent, and none of the suicides were over other women, but due to Hitler’s distant and non-attentive nature (Hitler was just being Hitler). After Eva’s second attempt, Hitler was more considerate of Eva, although kept her a secret from the general populist.
In WWI Hitler was a loner. At that early date, as a soldier, he avoided booze, tobacco and brothels.
I dare say I could find a link stating that the Holocaust didn’t take place, and I dare say some would believe, but that don’t make it so.
We’ve got to quit meeting like this. What will the neighbors say? WHAT WILL CHATTER SAY?!!?
P.S. Hitler also liked children.

Hitler was certainly evil as a human could be, but we should remember that he did not accomplish all of his bad deeds without a lot of help!

So true, but Stalin was no slacker. It’s a classic example of how easily people can be duped. Just give a bunch of people what they think they want, and away you go. Those that were classified as rebels, or hecklers, were eliminated. If more people studied history, perhaps mankind would stop repeating the same mistakes, but it appears that each generation has to experience such things first hand.
People allow themselves to be duped by wanting the government to take care of them and their needs..think for them. The same principle happens in a cult.
True. And can happen in religions. In fact, religions probably start as cults.quote:Originally posted by Serenity:

I would say cults start as religions
Jim Jones was a good example. My husband did work for them before Jim moved to Indianapolis and knew them well, continuing to do work for the inlaws. His cult stared as a church and evolved into a cult as he promised to take care of his followers.

In the beginning phase: Cult
Popularity phase: Religion
Obsolescent phase: Myth
Agree/disagree?
