Has anyone else had problems with the server crawling in response to "page back" commands? It seems to have been going on for weeks and I have wasted MORE time than I care to report waiting for it to respond. I have checked out other sites and not had such problems. Only on eBay.

So, I defragged my hard drive, ran my ad-aware program, tried and failed to dump my temp cookies folder . . . all for nothing.

What on earth is going on? Linda

Well tried switching the FW around, but it didnt even make a difference. I had contacted Ebay, they just stated to keep the Browser cleaned, which I have tried several times, but dosent make a difference. After 10 minutes or so on Ebay, the pages then begin to slow to a crawl when using page back within the browser..

Only does this on ebay, oh well I will just have to carry on and endure it...

I have gone to other auction sites and dont have that problem, so I am assuming its got to be within Ebay....

Gunny,

What happens if you use the eBay "back to list of items" vs. the browser back / forward arrows (alt-left arrow alt right arrow?)

In internet explorer, tools, internet options, on the general tab, temporary internet files sections, setting button do you have "check for newer versions of stored pages set to every visit to the page? It’s definitely eBay - I have a very high speed connection and get the same problem with their back to list of items link

I just tested my connection speed at http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
And got the results below but my ebay pages are slow but yahoo and others are fast.

Speed
3.3 megabits per second
Communications 3.3 megabits per second
Storage 397.5 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 2.6 seconds
Subjective rating Awesome

That's because it isn't a server problem. Back pages are stored in your own computer's cache and when you hit the Back button the page is re-displayed by your machine, not re-downloaded from eBay.

If you go off-line while you have eBay open you can still display your back pages but you can't open new ones - try it. As you jump to more and more different pages in eBay (or anywhere), so more information is stored in your cache, and maybe this is what slows down the response in some computers.

That's why time-remaining hasn't changed on eBay items when you back-page to them and why you need to refresh to see changes.

'Least, I think that's how it works. Wink

In part perhaps but I'm not sure. It might depend on your own setup. Immediate past files may be in RAM but older ones are written to your hard-drive cache file. This is set up by your browser and deletes unused files after a set period. I just looked at mine (in Netscape - Edit/Preferences/Cache) and the cache is set at 50Mb and there're thousands of files in there - gifs mostly.

Fetching all these files back out of your hard-drive might take some time in slower systems, perhaps slower than down-loading again.

Alanf51,

I check my browser and in internet options>tools> I have checked " Check for Newer Versions of page upon every visit "

I havnt tried the "Back to List" option on eBay but will try it and see how it works

My connection is pretty good as I tested it again and got these results

Communications 2.2 megabits per second
Storage 264.9 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 3.9 seconds
Subjective rating Great

Funny though how during the first 10minutes or so in ebay everything is fast loading and moves right along, its when after that time is when it slows........
I am no expert on this and as I suggested everyone's system is different.

If you have plenty of RAM, such as Serenity (WOW! Wish I had that much! Specially for image work) then your system may be keeping your back pages there, ergo instant recall. If on the other hand you only have 128Mb (like me) then a temperorary area on the hard-drive is created such as Gunny's. 894Mb sounds huge but if you've got the space on your HD, and it's only temporary anyway, that shouldn't be a problem. The drawback is that the files have to be recovered from the HD each time you go back to a previous page. If you can, reduce the size of the temp file Gunny, say by half, and see if that makes a difference. I admit I don't know much about IE, I try to avoid Gatesie's products where I can.

The cache stores pages you visit so that next time you go there they can load a bit faster, but only if the original hasn't changed in the meantime. If the system finds that it has, it downloads the new page instead. I know this isn't what I originally implied, but I'm still learning Wink too.

What I am sure of is that it has nothing to do with the server, just your local settings, speed, etc.

I have the max ram I can have on this system witch is 384, but I reduced the size of my IE Temp Folder and cleaned it out again...

I will see if this helps any, but what I dont understand is, only ebay is slow...other auction sites there is no problem... Confused

well I am going see how this works now with a reduced file folder size....
If the max you can put on your system Gunny is only 384Mb then that system needs updating asap. You either have an old laptop or a very old PC. Or, on a PC, you only have two slots filled with a 128 and a 256 or three slots filled with 128s... You may be able to swap them for bigger chips. (or is that French Fries - I get confused!)

Have your tried clearing down your IE history (keep the cookies - they're useful Mrs M!)?

I did a little search with Google just to see if I could come up with anything regard "Browser Slow In Ebay" and I badda bing!
badda boom! I found lots of forum links that show a lot of people having the same problem

IE:
http://answercenter.ebay.com/thread.jsp?forum=6&thread=810030323[/URL]

So from what I am reading, many people having similar or same problem within eBay and not else where like I am.

I still think its within the ebay servers causing this..... Confused
Big Grin In doing a little research regarding this, I believe I have solved my problem, cause right now I am crusing in ebay !!!, not a lick of slow down at all, whether I see the "Page Back" in IE Browser or the "Back to Listing" link in ebay...

My search's are FLYING ! no reload hesitation at all. Its INSTANT page loading...

Here is the link to what I did step by step as they instructed and be sure to scroll the whole page and see all the steps....

Least for me this really worked well ....
Normally, I think 512 is enough for most of today's programs. You might be able to buy a 512 and just replace one. Of course, you would end up with the other smaller ones too. Computers are not all alike so go to your computer manufacture site and check it out. I bought my ram from a reliable source on Ebay. It sure helped my computer!
Gunny;

Pleased to see you have it sorted. I still don't have that problem, even with only 64Mb RAM, and I have taken none of the steps you have discovered, which only goes to prove that every machine's setup is different I suppose. There are too many variables. Mac/PC, Netscape/IE, etc. etc.

Back pages are definitely stored on your own machine so perhaps that extra bumph from eBay is what's making them slower to re-load - yet Serenity and I have no problems even with vastly differing amounts of RAM. Is anyone using a Mac?
