Hi all, I've been sniping for a couple of months and love it! I need help on understanding something weird that just happened. I placed a snipe to win item 2867321935 but I know Sunday evenings on eBay can get really busy, so I also manually entered a bid. Can someone tell me why when I go into the # of bids, the 3 bids show that I bidded against myself & increased the $$ by $10. That's the first time that I've ever seen that. Can someone tell me how that happened? The seller has invoiced me at the higher $$ amount, is that correct?

That is how eBay works.

There is only 1 way in which you can outbid yourself. That is when you are already winning by less than a bid increment. In that case if you bid more eBay raises your bid to a full bid increment more than the next highest bidder.

Seems wrong to me, but that's the way they've always done it.

Maybe you can show your bid history to the seller and they'll give you the lower price. All you were doing was raising your bid to make sure you won, and instead eBay jacked up the price on you.

Also of note, the only way you can win by less than a bid increment is when another person has a proxy in for more than your current bid, and then you put in a bid higher than their proxy, but less than the next bid increment.

Example:

Say the current bid is $0.99 but the high bidder has put in a max of 9.99. If you then come along and bid 10.00 you can win by 1 cent. Normally you'd have to bid at least $10.49 to win since the bid increment is 50 cents.
Thanks Sara B., I didn't realize that eBay did that. It doesn't seem fair though I will consider it a lesson learned as the seller has already invoiced me. I've found in the past that it is always good to enter a manual bid when I can in addition to AS just for the extra security, but if you're bidding on a high ticket item it could really become much more costly and kind of defeating. Especially in this case where I was bidding against myself.
