What is a proxy outbid?

I've lost several auctions due to the reason of "proxy outbid". What exactly does this mean and can I avoid losing in the future? Thanks for helping out a newbie.

Hi,

It means that someone bid more than you on eBay.

The only way to beat that is to bid higher than they bid. Not a great solution really.

Keep trying. If you're bidding on non-unique items be sure to use the bid group feature which lets you bid on muliple items and stops bidding on the rest of the group once you win one.
