I've used AS for years, It doesn't work for me anymore...something is faster. I use the min. 3 sec. lead and somehow new bidders (not proxys from previous bids) are posting 1-2 seconds after my snipe goes in.
... but as long as your bid is in within the last 10 seconds or so what does it matter?
If I understand the "sneaky" part of an "automatic" last second bid is it prevents "manual" bidders from seeing your bid go in until it is too late.
If you bid $50 8 seconds before close and another person bids $50 1 second before close you will win! If they bid $51 15 seconds or 1 second before close they will win.
If I understand it properly there is no way to trick the system. AS serves to help you so you don't have to hunch over the keyboard at 2 in the morning. Its only dark side is the ability to lurk undetected so the previous bidders are lulled into a sense of securty.
Agreed - 8 seconds is a safer lead time and, remember, it's not the last bid that wins, it's the highest so your worry about being pipped at the post is unnecessary - bid you max, add a few pence/cents to avoid the tie and walk away...
I have AS set to snipe at 5 seconds and it rarely fails me.
To be honest, when I signed up for AS the least number of seconds you could sign up for WAS 5 seconds. They have changed that apparently. I would still never set it any lower. After all, computers are fast, but not instantaneous as one would believe. It DOES take a few seconds.
