What happened here?

I had a snipe placed on item number 3246465964 for $40.05 I recently received an email after the auction closed saying "Bid Too Low" It says the same on my Snipes Lost page. The snipe wasn't even placed, YET the auction closed at $40.03 It didn't even try, so how would AS have known the bid was too low in the first place? Going by the end auction price it wasn't too low.

Was it just because my snipe amount was so close to the winning bid that it thought I didn't have a chance of winning anyway, lol!

You didn't reach the next bid increment. ebay required you to bid at least $41.03.
