I need a few unbias opinions here, so let me know what you think.

I sold a Walking Talking Big Bird a while ago and the buyer emailed me to say he is broken - he wont stand up straight. Fair enough I think, maybe it happened in transit blah blah blah. I tell her to send him back and I will refund when I receive him. I sold him for $15.50 + $7.90 postage. He fit nicely in a pre paid with lots of those air bags around him so I know he was safe enough.

Now today I get a *Cash on Delivery* in the mail for $15.60!!!!
So all up I am expected to refund $39.
Hmmm - what do you guys think???

I know if this goes sour I can expect a NEG, but I wanted to see what others here would do?

...I think I'm choking!! Frown

Wow! This is one of those bad deals you have to decide how much you're willing to pay to make it go away!

Have you already accepted the COD? I'm inclined to agree with Chatter, but unfortunately I think you're correct to assume the inevitability of neg.FB! Did you & buyer talk about return shipment method at all? Who would pay for it?

(I used to wonder why some sellers would have screens & screens of purchase, payment, & return information along with descriptions of their items...NOW i KNOW!)

If you already accepted the package, was it broken? How long ago was the auction done? Might it have arrived OK, but been broken in the meanwhile?

Yuck! What a predicament! On a return, I would prefer the sender cover the return shipping cost. If pressed, I might agree to HALF the cost of a reasonable shipping method, but by chosing COD, the buyer CHOSE to use a more costly shipping method! If you were inclined to
cover the return shipping cost, maybe you should only cover $7.90 of it (the same shipping charge when you initially sent it out). Or maybe HALF of a REASONABLE return shipping charge ($3.95), with the buyer covering the remainder of the COD charge. The buyer should really learn from this episode that COD is NOT the way to go! Only a mail order IDIOT would think it is!

Sheesh! I'm glad this ISN'T my problem! Razz

Lexie, hope you can get this sorted out with relatively little pain! Wink

Thanks Guys Smile
My initial response was more emotionally driven rather than rationally driven (damn not thinking before I open my mouth - dont know if thats a female problem or a Lexie problem), so I thought a quick post in here to get some difference of opinions would save me sending the *****y email I have saved in "drafts" before I had a chance to settle down a little.
I havent accepted the COD but I was thinking that I would go and accept it and then deduct that sum from the refund amount, as Chatter stated, how would I know it was the correct item.
I didnt state the preferred way of return as it never occured to me to that she would send it any other way but how I sent it to her. I mean her way is nearly double. I could go and buy a friggen new one for the amount she expects me to refund.
I was thinking of refunding her the shipping amount that I think is reasonable, now I think I will leave an open ended email explaining nicely that I am annoyed and see what she suggests.

Thanks again Chatter and Jabber Smile

Oops Puppy - we overlapped.

I fully intended to pay shipping both ways, as the item is faulty or broke during shipping (no time for the item to break due to play reasons), but I didnt expect to pay NEARLY DOUBLE the shipping that was necessary.

Here in Australia we have two different sizes of prepaid Satchels. They are plastic and you can fit as much as you want in there so long as they dont go over the maximum weight. The smaller bag only saves 50 or 60 cents off normal postage at times, but you can see that the larger one can save a whole lot of money by using one.

Its really cheaper for me to inspect and decline the package and just refund her the original amount + $7.90. Hmmmm maybe thats not such a bad idea, I could make sure its big bird and then *return to sender*.

What do you think??? I wouldnt have Big Bird anymore, but if he is broken I dont really want him and I would only be out of pocket $23.40 instead of at least $31.30 maybe $39.00

My 2 cents... I would refuse the COD and refund her original money. NO, you don't know if it is your bird or what, but the situation is out of control at this point. I am assuming it was not insured? When I sell something that is breakable, the buyer can decline insurance, but will eat the mishandling , if any. I have had a couple of occasions where something was claimed broken. I just refund and go on.

Gunston is an Angora Goat and a pain in the bum coz he thinks he is a Mountain Goat and likes to climb amd jump on everything including people when they are gardening and the Rider Mower.

He is also quite naughty when it comes time to clip his coat, he has the attention span and the patience of a tea bag
