It appears to me that it was a proxy that was set off by your snipe. If you remember to snipe at the most you want to pay, then if this happens, they paid too much. Usually another one will come down the pike.

I see the winning snipe was placed 5 seconds before the close of the auction and yours was place 64 seconds before the close. I checked out the buyer's other auctions and didn't see any other snipes. So, I'd have to assume he's a proxy bidder. I also see that he's not a deep-pocket bidder based on his win ratio.

From all this, I would agree with you that his snipe was in retaliation to your snipe, and that he had more then sufficient time to place his bid. Had AS placed your snipe in the last 10 or 15 seconds, you most likely would have won.

I'll let someone else answer the "why" of it being placed so early.

Hmmm...the bid was placed a full minute before the snipe you set...I assume that AS perhaps thought your lead time was very short, I know I wouldn't reccomend going under 5 seconds, and Sunday nights are very high traffic. I assume they wanted to be on the safe side and get your bid in. After all, getting the bid in was a lot better than if it hadn't gone in at all, though I undestand why you might be frustrated. I myself would feel uneasy to see my snipe go in that early, especially on a popular widget that I know has other snipers on the lookout. I suggest maybe putting in a longer lead time for a Sunday night, or manually sniping if you feel safer that way. Sunday nights I generally like to snipe manually (no offense to AS ^^; ) since I have a DSL modem. Of course, I can't always be at the computer either, so I have to rely on AS a lot of the time, even some Sundays.
