Where do your dogs go to college? Is this a Guide Dog program?
Leader Dogs is in Rochester, Paws (current pup) is about 20 miles south of Grand Rapids.
Shirley, I really think that is the greatest thing he is doing!
Sounds terrific! The guy who sits next to me at work has a farm where he shelters dogs taken in by a Basset Rescue operation -- he currently has about thirty puppies and five or so "seniors" from the last rescue. When I saw your sig, I thought maybe you were in one of those operations, too.
DId I see you were from Texas originally, Shirley?
Yup. (read that with the appropriate drawl...)
I do it for obvious reasons, but it's ALLOT of fun as well. You should see the looks I get at the grocery store with a dog.
Puppy, I'll bet you do!
Shirley, Mom was born in Alice, Tx.
Shirley, Mom was born in Alice, Tx.
I can imagine. Do you normally keep them for about 14 months? And how old are they when you get them?
That's funny, Mrs. M! I was born in Alvin, and when I went to college (in Austin) I kept seeing these kids wearing the same burnt-orange letter-jacket as me, with a big A on it... turns out they were from Alice! I didn't even know where it was before that.
Well, not sure how big it is now, but the last time I wa there , it was a little "dirtwater" town...but Mom loved it!
They come just as soon as they are able to leave mom and get 'tested'. 7-8 weeks old. They are with me for 12-15 months, and then off to college. They are in formal training for another 6-9 months and then 'matched' with a person, and go home with them. Another 4 months of In Home custome training and then they are certified as a team, and recertified every 18 months or so until retirement.
Wow, they mean it when they call them "working dogs"!!
Alvin is similar, but it's closer to Houston so it gets more traffic. Alice is in "the Valley", right?
Well, got to get up early, so I better say goodnight, sweet dreams to y'all!
You too -- and me, too! 'Night, all!
Night M
Puppy,
Do any of the dogs ever "wash out"? Either with you or in college? Are there dogs that are just deemed to NOT have the right stuff to be a service dog?

About 30% are 'career changed' (they refuse to use the words washed out or flunked) Usually because of a health problem, but not only for that. Some just don't have it in them.

And, sometimes, even if you have the correct URL for a post, clicking on the click doesn't bring up the right post. It might take clicking twice. It doesn't happen often, but if it does, try clicking it a 2nd time. A lot of pictures can slow down bring up the page. But, I've seen it happen with text only pages.
Once you've found the post, using the "search" feature with the author and some unique word will give you the direct link.

[Rhetorical questions]
Why is it that in golfing the spectators, AND the announcer, whisper? I don’t know of any other sport where that happens (maybe pool or bowling – but I don’t know). Golfing doesn’t require more concentration then say baseball (but I don’t know). Maybe it has something to do with the fact that in golfing the spectators (or are they called something else?) have to move. Maybe it’s because the spectators feel they are part of the action, in that they are at least mobile (but I don’t know). In other sports people sit on their duffs, so maybe they yell to feel more of a part of the game. Maybe it has something to do with the Scots (is Scotches preferred?). Maybe it’s because Scots are more respectful or considerate (but I don’t know). Maybe it has something to do with the lack of a uniform (but I don’t know). Maybe it has something to do with a changing scenery versus looking at the same field, diamond, court, table, track, alley, ring, rink, pool (but I don’t know). Maybe it has something to do with having trees around (but I don’t know). Maybe they feel the same way they do when they’re taking a walk in a park (but I don’t know).
Is it only rude to make noise, or is it a rule (I don’t know)?

Maybe golf, pool, bowling, chess, poker, are 'games' and not sports?
Now to all you golf, pool, bowling, chess, and poker fans, I know I might be 'asking for it', but that was a question, not a statement, so be kind.
That may be (but I don't know). People do ask, "How's your golf game?"
P.S. Maybe outdoors/indoors makes a difference.

I can tell you it is a lot of fun to blow the car horn when you live across from a golf course! ...Its all in the timing!
BTW, they also ask how was the basketball, football, game, etc.
