MAN I DONT KNOW WHATS GOING ON. I USED TO BE ABLE TO SET A SNIPE FOR 1 SEC AND I WOULD ALWAYS WIN. THEN THIS LAST AUCTION TONITE- I HAD A PRE-EMPTIVE SNIPE FOR $75 DOLLARS TO GO OFF WITHIN 2 SECONDS, THEN ONE FOR $85 DOLLARS TO GO OFF WITHIN 1 SEC, THAT WAY HED SEE THE 75 BID AND TRY TO ONE UP ME AND BID 76 AND ID STILL WIN BUT SOMEHOW EVEN THOUGH I HAD THE 85 DOLLAR BID WITHIN A SEC OF ITS CLOSING, HE STILL WON! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME WIN

why are you doing two snipes,i would just do one and put in the your very top price say $85 and the system will bid up for you, say the item is on $60 and the other guy has put in a top price of £70 and you put in $85 in the sniper the system will bid you up to say $71 and you win.
Its only you top price that can lose you the item unless there are say 5 people sniping it, the only ones i have lost are the ones that my top bid price was to low.and i use 5 sec snipe with no probs if you are useing 2sec it may be to late?.

The last three bids on this item looked like this:

anthony12368(6) $86.00 Nov-10-02 16:19:42 PST

anthony12368(6) $86.00 Nov-10-02 16:17:23 PST

deimos_agonistes(33) $85.00 Nov-10-02 16:20:03 PST

This tells me that approximately 2 1/2 minutes *before* deimos_agonistes's bid, anthony 12368 had placed a bid that was at least $86.00, and then placed a second "insurance" bid that was even higher 45 seconds prior to deimos_a's bid. Deimos-agonistes, you were outbid before you ever placed that $85 bid. Your max bid just wasn't high enough. It happens.
One more answer to your question. Why did you still now win? The other bidder had a higher Max bid than you. It won't matter how many seconds you allow if your Max bid isn't the highest. You shouldn't be doing Snipes upon Snipes within seconds of one another anyway. What a way to tie up the AS software! If you bid YOUR Maximum bid and are comfortable with that, bid 5 seconds lead time, that will get you a win "IF" your Max is the highest when all bidding is finaled. Despite your best intentions, there can always be another manual bidder or Sniper to come along and one up you. That's life on eBay. Sometimes you win & sometimes you lose. Wink
When I place a snipe on an item, all I do is tell AS how much (total) I am willing to pay for the item. Then I keep it on 5 sec bid time, within that time AS will blast out my total bid amount and will for the most part usually out bid all other bidders on Ebay. You also want to tell AS a dollar amount then some change. Because most people like to feel comfortable with whole bid amounts.
Example:

Item you wish to bid on: starting bid = 2.00
Total amount you're willing to pay = 15.75 <...example of amount you can pay anything!>
Amount other bidders will usually place = 15.00

Your .75 cents will override their highest bid. So, when you place a snipe, make sure you include an odd number for your highest bid, and watch the wins roll in!! I use this system and make a winning killing! LMAO! Wink
All good advice, it is a shame that some people cannot grasp how Ebay Auction's Proxy Bidding and Auction Sniper work!

I wonder, if Deimos had won with two snipes in place, would AS have charged him twice? Also, how was he expecting the person to react to his $75 bid with only two seconds to go? I wish my reactions were that quick! Still, I do like the expression Pre-emptive snipe - that'll really wind-up the anti-sniping league!!!! Wink

[Just had a thought, will AS allow you to place two snipes at one time or is Deimos using two IDs and effectively bidding against himself?] Wink Wink

CAPS LOCK ON | caps lock off
but sniping makes it fun and exciting! Use bid groups to ensure that you find the items you are looking for at a reasonable price.

One other thing I have come to realize is that things come in waves... if you cannot find the item you are looking for try again in a few weeks... then you may find 20 of them!!

Never underestimate the power of the snipe Eek
