Rick posted a few "rules" about view-counts the other day, but that made me wonder...

When I look at a forum, does the viewcount get an uptick every time I click to go to the next page?

If I've just posted a new message, the view counter gets several ticks for all the views and updates that takes... But what about if I use my "back" button from there to go back to the topic list?

So if I click through two or three pages in a topic, then post a message, then use the "Back" button to return to the forum list, I could be adding eight or ten ticks to the "Views" list, when really I only visited it once?

No wonder the count gets so high!

The best that I can see, bringing up anyone of the forum pages doesn't impact the count. Also, I think the count only goes up when you bring up the topic, whether you start at the first page, or go to the last, or bounce around.

Also, if anyone doesn't know this, clicking on the "Last Post" column causes the last post to be displayed. This works on the forum's home page, and each forum's page.

One other thing about view counts - Sara has pointed out that many people don't register/post on the forum. They only view, which causes a hit.

That makes sense. There are a few forums that get so many messages, that clicking the "last post" takes me several screens beyond the last message I read. So basically I was wondering what impact I'm having on the view counter if I'm paging around to figure out where I left off, then paging forward as I read messages, then paging backwards to refresh my memory about what everyone is talking about, then paging forward to post, then going back to edit my post, then refreshing a couple of times to see if anyone posted while I was typing...

kind of. Maybe it's a cookies issue, or a proxy issue. For some reason, when I'm on my computer at home, the main Forums screen updates as soon as I refresh. But at work, and not always but sometimes, the main forums menu (top level) doesn't update. The list of topics inside the forums (second level) is fine, though.

But since I'm not supposed to be checking the forums from work, I just decided to stop complaining! (grin)
