Shouldn't ebay show $51.68 if that was the last, if unsuccessful, bid?
No. The reserve price was more than 51.68.

Your bid of 51.68 was sent, but still didn't meet the reserve. The next highest bid was 20, and one increment above that is the displayed 20.50.

The current winning bid only jumps to the reserve price once it is met or exceeded. Before and after that, prices are displayed as they would be in an auction with no reserve.
We bid your max. If it is enough to meet the reserve it will, and as long as nobody else bids higher you'll win the item.

Sometimes in cases like this one I'll email the seller and tell them my max bid was $51.68 and see if they'll sell it to me. It's possible their reserve was $52 and you just missed winning. Usually also I email the seller when I bid on reserve items to ask them what the reserve is. I'd say about 60-70% of the time they tell me.
