In fact he got two bids in in the last 20 seconds so I would suspect that some software was involved. Ask him!

This is routinely done by AS during peak periods, such as Sunday evenings, and has been carried out for several years. It seems odd that you have not noticed it before.

Still doesn't answer my original question, unless he has some pretty sophisticated software that activates snipes before they are meant to to expose them?

Oh well, I guess better luck next time, it just was the second bid on the same type of item from the same seller that I missed in a row. The first one was suspiciously like a seller buyback also.
