So I've been reading these forums for about three days now, and I'm pretty confident that my first snipe (in about 20 minutes) will go fairly smoothly, assuming my max bid is generous enough. I'm just wondering if anyone on the forum right now has any specific advice on lead time for a closing at 19:00:00 - mine is currently set to 10. I'm paranoid enough to think that this might not be enough, especially since I have to be elsewhere in about five minutes, and can't witness the actual closing seconds. Thanks!

I think 10 seconds on a weeknight - even if your auction ends on the hour should be adequate, but you may want to adjust to 12 seconds.
It would be highly unlikely that a manual snipe could be placed in less than 12 seconds in response to your bid.
If a bid gets placed after your snipe, it most likely was an automated snipe and wasn't in relation to your bid.
From what I can see, the last bid placed was at 15:13:10 - well before the end of the auction at 19:00.
I don't see that your bid was even placed.
It is possible that due to the number of bids eBay was processsing at the hour, a 10 second lead time may not have been sufficient for eBay to process your bid.

The other question I have for you is -did you use a bid group to snipe with, or did you snipe this as a stand-alone item?

I would like to have one of our more experienced members give their thoughts to this matter.
Hopefully, we can find out what happened.
If you go to your auction and click history, then click where it says private and follow it through, you will be able to email him to ask about his private feedbacks. I guess at that point, you could approach him, but who knows. I'll bet if you watch, another coat will pop up . That's usually the way it is. I do think I would contact As, however, on your failed snipe placement. There seems to have been plenty of lead time in my opinion.

I checked out eBay's System announcement board - nothing there to indicate a system failure, but it may be too early to post.

This problem makes me wonder if the promotion eBay was running last week affected the processing times due to the high volume of new listings on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week.

I will be very curious to find out what happened also.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Frown
Unknown error means there was a server problem with Ebay, not As according to AS message help. I cannot imagine that these lead times were not sufficient.

Hi,and thanks once again rsmiller .[I've had trouble logging onto the Forum today -been getting the the AS admin. window for some reason.]
Just seemed an odd coincedence happening at the same time as DJ's missed bid ,which is why I've mentioned it,be interesting to know how often this stuff goes on.

Hi James,
A complete coincedence. AS has out-sourced this fourm. The company they use is infopop. Wink
ah well, there goes the AS corner store/family business delusion.
On another matter,I missed another snipe -this time due to not bidding high enough, but my snipe was placed 3 times! Makes one look a bit like one of those last minute mind changers, who keep raising their bid or worse, a really dopey nibbler that one,as a stately and resolute sniper, holds in such contempt.
I've had it happen once before ,but that time I won so the disgrace wasn't quite so accute.
In all seriousness tho ,wonder how often that happens, probably an ebay glitch.[Heres the item # in case it is a truly unusual occurence 2557797454]
James,

AS places 2+ snipes from a corresponding number of servers for each of your snipes. It does that to insure that even if there's some problem, that at least one of those snipes will get thru. Since ebay isn't suppose to let a user place multiple bids for the same amount, you usually will only see the first snipe. Every once in awhile, we've had some members that have commented about having 2 snipes placed, but you're the first with 3. They always have the same bid time. But, 3 is better then 0. Cool
