Over the last three or four weeks, I've used AS on an item, only to lose it by one cent. Nothing unusual about losing this way, except that it's for the same item, and the loss is always a last second outbid, only to have the same item relisted a day or so later. Another part of the general weirdness, is that there are only 9-12 watchers, and no one bids at all, until the last two or three seconds, and always one cent higher than mine, no matter what my bid is. And I do use non-standard amounts.

I've just about torn my hair out over this, because I think that there is something fishy in Denmark here.

This has happened to me four times now, and each time the exact same auction item has been lost by one cent, and every single one of those auctions has been lost at the very last second. On top of the fact that no one is bidding at all, until I get outbid in the last two or three seconds.

I researched similar items from this same seller, and found that on average, his items go for a consistent price level, around $17.00 I've bid slightly above this price level each time, using non-standard bid amounts, such as $17.81, $18.58 and such, and it seems to me that somehow, someone is suspiciously placing a snipe that is one cent higher.

Now, please don't lecture me on Proxy Bidding, because I've read it already. I seriously think that the seller is manipulating the bidding somehow. Problem is, there's no way to prove it. But the pattern is too clear. It is walking like a duck, and quacking like a duck.

The issue is not that I'm being outbid, it is that it's the exact same item each time, and the outbid is within the last three seconds, with no other bidders at all having placed bids, except at the last two or three seconds. And then the same item gets relisted the next day. Too weird.

Any ideas?

If you’re suspecting a shill, then the seller is pretty inept. As far as one, or multiple bidders, some how bidding just enough to outbid you by a penny, well any one of the 10 gazillion ebay bidders not in on this could screw up their plans. It’s not just bidding one more cent than the next highest bidder, but the current price has to be low enough so that an increment + one cent bid can be placed.

Best idea I can come up with – you have bad karma.

But, with that in mind, if you have your doubts, walk away. They can’t be the only fish, or duck, in Denmark.

There’s only one forum user that I know of that harps on that, and that’s region2. My advice - ignore him. ALL the other users on this forum are pleasant, charming, intelligent and good looking – like me!
HA!

Thanks, Rick... I appreciate your thoughts on this. Yes, it occurred to me that there might just be bad joss, but for it to have happened four times was just pushing the statistical odds just a bit too far into the realm of the really weird.

One thing, this item is one of the only ones I've ever seen on here, at least for a reasonable price, all the rest seem to cost just what they would in stores. I'm just trying to be a cheapskate about things.

Thanks much...
Is the "winning bidder" always the same person?
What is the posted bid increment? Is it 1¢, or does the winning bid ignore the posted bid increment?

Do you think it's possible that the Seller is setting up a "winning bid" by a sniper, in order to establish how much his item should be worth, by reflecting how much is bid on it, in order to avoid the Reserve bid feature (cost)?

One way is to set up a snipe valued at some huge figure, to see it it wins! I.e., he might have set up his own snipe at $50, just to run up the bid as you suggest.
I can see a seller doing this maybe on an item which they know or really anticipate selling for a higher price. BUT in the end, this would end up costing them money in the long run, listing fees and final percentage sale fees from ebay and then the percentage fee from the sniper program they use. In the long run, not worth for them. The other thing to bear in mind, is that they have to be fairly accurate in assessing what the proxy bid will be. However, I do miss being able to do recon on buyers and sellers. I did successfully work how one seller with two accounts, one for bidding and one for selling whom I then avoided like the plague. Harder to do that now Frown
