Question for the old timers

Pierre Omidyar, the Founder and Chairman of eBay, was the Cofounder of Ink Development Corp., which became eShop, one of the early pioneers of online shopping, subsequently bought by Microsoft. After he conceived the idea of an internet auction site, Mr. Omidyar took the "e" in "eBay" from "eShop," and since eBay's corporate headquarters is located in San Jose, CA, which is at the southern tip of San Francisco Bay, it's pretty apparent where the "Bay" in "eBay" came from.

I thought it was because they were originally running the auction site through an ISP called eBay. When they got real popular they bought out the ISP because everyone had come to recognize that name.

Someone here must know the truth. Which is it? Or is it something even different than these two?

I have no idea who is correct, but I've never heard San Jose referred to as near the tip of San Francisco Bay. That's funny, I'm LMAO!

San Jose is located in Santa Clara County, nestled in a valley about an hours drive (depends on commuter traffic) from SF. It's alongside Silicon Valley (Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Saratoga ...). I suppose if we were talking Milpitis, we'd be closer to the tip of the Bay!

I know the truth - been a member since almost Day 1. Steve is pretty dead on.

eBay = The "e" stands for e-commerce and the "Bay" stands for the San Francisco bay area.
