Yes, of course you can loose. The one that bids the most wins. The advantage to sniping is that you are not running the price up as the auction progresses because your one time snipe(proxy, if you will) is placed at the last possible moment. Just bid the max you want to pay. If someone overbids you then, he has paid too much.
