proxy bidding

Hi and WELCOME!!

This is JUST me.

Let's say that I find an item for a widget. Evrybody likes that term! I put in a proxy bid for $15. eBay will continue to up my bid until it reaches my max of $15. Somebody comes along and bids, my price goes up, their price goes up, and on and on and on. Eventually you can have a bidding war and if you don't catch yourself, instead of paying $15 for that widget, you can wind up paying $30. Buyer's remorse can set in. I really didn't mean to pay that much!

Now for AS. I put in my snipe for $15. Nobody knows that I will bid 5 seconds before the end of the auction. The widget is at $3, my snipe max is $15. Five seconds before the end - boom - AS bids for me! I win the auction for $3.25!

Some people can get caught up in the heat of the auction and don't see what they are bidding until it's all over. AS makes ONE bid at the last second. If you win with your max )or under your max,) chances are that you will have paid less than what you thought you could get it for. The only problem with AS is that you have to make sure that you bid your max - you only get one shot!

Also, if I'm bidding on a widget and then decide that I really don't want it. It then takes an act of Congress to get the bid retracted and it's marked on your record. With AS, you decide that you really don't want something, you just cancel the snipe. Nobody knows that you even wanted the widget. I think you can cancel up to one minute before the close of the auction, but I'm not sure. Somebody will come along and correct me.

Personally, I love AS. I have won more auctions for less money than if I had bid through proxies.

Thanks for the info. One other question .. what if two people have the same maximum bid amount set through AS or Proxy and same bid time .. how is a winner decided ?

Everything Crafty has told you is true

AS is great for not revealing your interest in an item so keeping you and your emotions out of the bid wars. Great for those sort after collectables.

Being able to cancel your snipe is a GREAT tool, once you place your proxy with ebay you are locked in - unless you cancel your bid of course.

The thing to remember with Auction Sniper is to bid the MAXIMUM you are willing to part with for the item you are bidding on. You need to find the *sweet spot*, it has to be between..."Bugger I lost, I would of paid more for that" and "OMG!! I cant believe I bid that much!!".

You only have one shot so deciding your MAX is the hardest part, of course if you get outbid before the end you can up your snipe, but that would mean you havent actually put in your MAX.

If you lose the auction - it has to be because someone else paid more than you thought the item was worth.

Then the person who's bid was registered first with ebay would win!! Therefor, we all suggest you bid an odd amount, say $20.28 instead of $20.00...that way you will WIN over the $20.00 bidder and avoid that scenario you mentioned.

I would be really surprised if there was 2 bids in for an odd amount like that.

That's a great suggestion as it sems most people bid in whole numbers.

Being new, I'm full of questions. In the upper left corner of My Snipes page it states I have 3 snipes remain for my free trail. It said that when I had 2 item listed, then when I had 4 listed and it still states hat now that I have 6 listed. How many snipes do you get for free and how d they bid on the remaining items while your getting payments set up.

You get 3 FREE snipes. After you have used all three snipes, then you're charged at minimum a quarter a snipe or a certain percentage - depending on the final price of the item. I think the most expensive fee I have ever paid was 41 cents?

I don't mind paying the fee at all. AS has saved me a BUNDLE!!!! AS won me over when I won a 3-room tent for $25!!!!

Questions are always welcomed. People here are great, friendly, funny, and sometimes hostile - like me right now - but that's in a different thread! lol

Keep asking. Somebody has the answer.

Thank you Crafty Let me make sure I'm understanding this correctly, after 3 swipes .. if the fourth auction is ending within a matter of miniutes of the third auction .. AS still bid the fourth auction and then just inform me of the fee I owe .. or will they not bid untill I agree to a contract or pay a down payment.

Chanel - After your 3 free snipes you would have to upgrade your account to keep sniping. If you dont want to pay via credit card you can transfer some funds from your paypal account, if you use it that is.

Since you have so many snipes set up, I would just transfer $5 via your Paypal account and keep on sniping.

If people bid their true max on eBay, there would not be any differance except for the timing. However the fact is, most (or at least many) bidders at eBay don't enter their max. Instead they bid just enough to gain the lead and stop. Only when they are outbid, will they come back and enter a higher amount. If you place your max bid in the last few seconds, they don't have the chance to counter with that higher bid.

I like to use a credit card. It's faster to set up, and you don't have to keep a balance at AS. From what I've heard, PayPal transfer can take anywhere from less than an hour up to a few days. For example, if you send payment late Friday, it may not get accepted till Monday morning. AS is a very secure and trustworthy site.

Chanel, looks like everyhing got pretty well covered. I will just add.....

That is so true. So many bidders do NOT enter their true max--they enter what they hope to win for, and that is why our true max's work so well through AS. There is no more time for the nibblers to come back.

The best thing is to simply leave your credit card info now, then you won't have to worry about what to do between auctions three and four.

As for PayPal, that is what I have always used to pay. Though the AS disclaimer warns that it could take up to a few days, it always seems to be processed by the next day for me, or even the same day when I pay early in the day. I leave enough for about three months, then I simply replenish.

...since it wasn't clear to me from your question that you realize -- you are only charged for a snipe (either free or fee) when your snipe results in a WIN! If your snipe doesn't result in an auction win for you -- no charge!. No win! No cost! All the other answers were complete.

Also, 2 bids being recorded at the exact SAME SECOND by ebay is quite rare. Those 2 bids being the exact same amount received at the exact same moment is even rarer! Otherwise, for identical bids, ebay considers the first bid received is awarded the winning status.

Thanks for all the good information. Being new I don't want to assume anything and end up unnecessarily loosing a bid that I might have won.
