I just found this guy - he's set his feedback to private so you cannot read it.
Doesn't that defeat the object of having feedback on Ebay?

With 184 negatives I'd elect to make my feedback private, too. Looks as though the whole thing is part of an eBay administrative action against the seller. It is unusual, though. I've never seen anything like it either. Maybe he's some kin of the eBay owner. 
Actually anyone can elect to make their feedback private. I've run across quite a few on eBay. And I REFUSE to do business with anyone who hides their feedback. I've passed on some very desirable items I've wanted to bid on, simply because the seller had private feedback. If someone feels they have to hide their feedback, than I don't want to do business with them.
Star_trkr is correct, anyone can make their feedback private. And I agree that I would not do business with them ...most of the time...the numbers are still available so if someone had only a few negatives compared to hundreds of positives, I'd consider it.
There are circumstances that would warrant a seller making their feedback temporarily private until offending feedback is removed by eBay (such as posting address or other personal information in a feedback)

Agreed, star_trkr, but the guy's overall feedback ratings were still out in plain sight for everyone to see. If a seller has 184 negs with fewer than 1,000 total feedbacks I don't care what he got them for; I won't do business with him on that basis alone.
I also want to know the point of private feedback. I just cancelled a bid on something great cause the guy had 1 feedback (neg) and had it private! I'm holding back from blasting him on it lol in an email. Funny no one else is bidding on anything of his either. Plus the item I wanted usually sky rockets in auctions...his loss lol 
I'd take a chance and snipe it, pervinpatty. With only one neg the guy sure doesn't have much to hide, and perhaps it's like robert said, he's made it private because it was retaliatory feedback or revealed his address or phone number or similar confidential information. 
too late it has come n gone. I even sent him a :P email lol. I won't deal with anyone that hides things even retalitary. I like to form

Can anyone imagine an innocent reason why someone would keep their feedback hidden? I can't. Can there be any other reason than it's really baaaad?I love my feedback! I'd like to post it all over the internet.
Yeah, I can think of one: where the guy posting the feedback gave out my home address and phone number. Ebay will remove that eventually, but until that's done I don't want anybody to see that feedback. Capice? 
In the olden days of eBay, private feedback was really private, it told you nothing, not even an overall score.
Now days it at least tells you the overall score.
I had a seller that claimed he had shipped my item UPS and yet could not provide a tracking number. As time went on and I tried all available methods to resolve the problem, (eBay, email, Square Trade, PayPal, phone calls) he switched his feedback to private so that he could continue to run auctions even though he was not shipping products.
It took eBay two months to kick him off, while he sold at least 50 more items @ $50 each. I would email bidders on his auctions and tell them the reason he was getting negatives and his feedback was private was because he was not sending any product. I was amazed at how many people left their bids and others that would bid on auctions with the seller having high negatives and private feedback.
Moral of the story is if there are negatives and they are private you should probably avoid the auction. Most eBayers are proud of their feedback and work to maintain it.
I did collect from eBay's insurance but it did not include shipping charges and had a $25.00 deductible.

Next time you write to him, suggest that he include a prominent explanation of his reason for private feedback in his item description. It might help boost his sales.
