Yes. It's no different then if you happened upon the auction and bid manually. If you are the only bidder and you meet the seller's reserve if there is one you WIN!

I always thought I would have to make a small manual bid just to open or get the auction started, but now I know I can lurk in the dark infinitely until the shots are called.

One small thought here. Seller Psychology.

When I really want something and the seller has received no bids at all after several days, I normally place a lowish bid to encourage him or her not to withdraw the item.

I have just done so on an item because I felt there was a risk of the seller abandoning the auction - five days & no bids! Once they have abandoned, they never seem to want to accept the low price they had previously started with! I know this to my cost as I often follow up some of these bargain nil interest items (OK, so ebay don't like it, but so what!)

Don't waste your time on things that you are interested in simply because they look a bargain - just use AS at the end as normal - you may then get your bargain because you have not shown your hand and others will just bid low.

I find that a seller ending an auction early due to no bids is an extreme rarity. Much more likely is the fact that a bid on an item generates interest, for whatever reasons. Bid during an auction and you are showing interest that could easily bring the price up. Also, other snipers may see the early bid and decide to increase their snipe amounts. Only once did I ever have a scheduled snipe on an auction that ended early, but I frequently snipe auctions that have no activity until the last hours or even minutes. That is part of the stealth naure of sniping.

Don’t forget – a seller can see the number of people that are Watching the auction on their “My ebay” page.
